'Intellectual laziness and the hurry of the age have produced a craving for literary nips. The torpid brain has grown weak for sustained thought. There never was an age in which so many people were able to write badly' Sounds familiar? Does this ring a bell? Oh good, because this was written in 1891. 'There is a great tendency among the children today to rebel against restraint, not only that placed upon them by the will of the parent, but against any restraint or limitation of what they consider their rights... this fact has filled well minded people with great apprehensions for the future' Written in 1906 Source: http://xkcd.com/1227/ ( I had to hand write this crap out) I highly recommend checking out the Vsauce video on this topic, since that is put together infinitely better than anything I post here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD0x7ho_IYc

  • This is an excellent observation, I'm glad you posted this. Because there's little left of literary prowess in any music of today. People don't read nearly as much and it's always been the key to literary artistry. The ability to write with sharp, concise distinction or to write with graceful eloquence, words that flow like a ribbon of silk, they're traits long gone in the industry. It's the very reason people are saying that this is a systematic dumbing down of the world. It is represented in music, in film, and especially in literature. It's regrettable and shocking to see such terribly narrow minded people get published in all forms of media.

I felt that I got an impression from that first paragraph. But if i missed the point, it's probably because I didn't watch the video. Edit: Ok i get it now. Seems a little defensive though. Perhaps because when you're a kid, you still do have alot of life experiences that are yet to mold you, though. But that's a thing that repeats itself in every generation. Every adolescent reaches an age where they're smart enough to think for themselves and yet still very naive too. Hence why previous generations will presume to say "you really just don't know, kid, do you" and kids will rebel against it. These things are reflected in music too. It's the reason they hated types like Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber so much. Because they come across as debacherous little shits. Every generation will have those. It'll hinge on the very same unwritten law of moral compass, what people think is a crap influence. Seen as a despicable excuse for what should accepted as the norm. And they wonder why so many people seem to follow so blindly. Truly though, what's the point... It'll be a cycle that never ends. People feel the way they feel. Emotions are too strongly embedded in the ideologies of people, you will never change it. And inherently, older generations that have lived and learned, payed bills, made mistakes in romance, failed and suffered or succeeded and prospered will have something valuable to contribute that adolescents simply cannot have experienced themselves yet. Notice how in the video, he reports that kids are mathematically smarter, yet doesn't say that the world itself as a whole has become further developed. And he addresses literature but avoids providing any evidence that younger generations are actually using smarter or better writing skills. Because statistically, I'm pretty sure that isn't happening at all. His statistics, at best, are presented for sake of the convenience to drive home his point. A nicely dressed up much ado about the same old shit everybody already knew. Could've just said history repeats itself. Because we already knew it.
How does one 'scale' how developed the world itself is? Medicine, technology, transportation, and a multitude of other things has advanced since the 90s.
And he addresses literature but avoids providing any evidence that younger generations are actually using smarter or better writing skills.
Such as....?
Because statistically, I'm pretty sure that isn't happening at all. His statistics, at best, are presented for sake of the convenience to drive home his point
He gave statistics and sources. You yourself just said 'because statistically, im pretty sure that isn't happening at all' Show me da evidence to back up your claim.
