And since life is only known to exist on Earth... Carbon is the basis of all life

*puts on a holiday disposition* Never use absolutes. To say that all life is carbon based may turn out to be incorrect in the future. To say that all known life at this given point in time is carbon based is entirely correct.

Since all we have to go on is what's on our pale blue dot, and until evidence shows otherwise... Carbon is the basis of all life.
Never use absolutes.
??

Edited by Thaddeus Hamlet: 12/8/2015 2:07:16 AM *puts on a holiday disposition* I guess there's no real way for either of us to win this one. We're arguing using two different schools of thought. One where it is reasonable to assume that an idea is correct (as long as there is substantial evidence of course, which in this case there is) until proven otherwise... And one where it is unreasonable unless all of the evidence is acquired, and until that point it can only be stated as a strong possibility.
I embrace the irony of that phrase.
