• Yep. One of Russia's biggest advantages is that the harsh environment of the land makes it easier to defend against attackers that are unused the the extreme cold. Especially so in winter, which was when the Germans attacked Russia. The German troops were completely unused to fighting in the cold, while the Russians, who lived there all their lives, were used to it. The only people who ever succeeded in conquering Russia in the winter were the Mongols, in the post classical era. TL;DR: Russia's extreme winters are one of its best defensive points.

His intended enemy was Russia. The rest of his enemies just got in the way pretty much. He had two war goals: 1 - Unify German-speaking people, including former parts of Germany lost after WWI, and Austria. 2 - Seize farmland from Ukraine for eastward expansion. He invaded Poland mainly to get the former German city Danzig (now Gdansk). Britain and France had signed defense pacts with Poland. When Germany invaded, Britain and France declared war. Hitler was astounded they would go to war over that, and took six months ("The Phony War") to actually start fighting. At the time Britain declared war, they had one combat-ready division! In the West, we tend to incorrectly assume it was about revenge against France for WWI. The Germans had no love of France, but invading it was not part of their prewar plan. As big as our WWII European battles were, the German vs Russia battles were on another scale, brutal, gargantuan. With Hitler dead in the bunker and 13 million Red Army troops closing in on Berlin, there were still 1 million German troops trying to defend the city.

Interesting fact: when this country (US) held elections for what it's official language was going to be, German lost out to English by 2 votes.

Neato. Edit: to clarify, I'm still going to tell the tale of a single vote if the topic ever comes up. It just sounds better.

  • There was nothing wrong with him trying to take Russia, he just didn't listen to his advisors and ended up putting cold troops in the wrong places.
