Any idea why the Red Death would be a destroy-on-sight weapon, even without Hive influence?

We know little of red death. Some of us more involved in the lore community have managed to peace together this much - long ago, around the rise of the city or maybe shortly after a team of guardians was sent to investigate something. One of the guardians wielded the weapon that would become red death. Out there they encountered something of great power that drove one of the guardians insane. That night he killed the rest of his team and returned to the city and began slaughtering innocents till he was killed (possibly by one of the iron lords or takonome Rangers, it is unknown if this guardian had any relation to dredgen yor and thorn but I suspect he might.) he was killed but his weapon was not destroyed, it was unable to be cleansed or purified for some reason and every guardian after him to use it has slowly gone insane or died a tragic death.
