Best thing is to look up videos about it.
But, in the simplest terms, you play as what is known as a Vault dweller, who are people who survived nuclear winter by hiding in special underground domiciles called "Vaults." As always, some plot lines happen and then you emerge from the Vault and lay eyes on what the world is like if a nuclear war had happen. Mutants, scavengers, radiation.
Won't go too far into it, but its a FPS with HEAVY rpg elements. As much as people argue it, it is essentially Skyrim with guns and a apocalyptic landscape as opposed to a fantasy theme. There are monsters, robots and raiders. It's a very good game series, with only slight tie ins from the past games. Alot of stuff to do, and I mean a -blam!-en lot. Gameplay in the past has felt clunky but not to the point gameplay was terrible. Expect bugs and a whole slew of them, but Bethesda is quick to fix them.
This one has alot more potential to it because down the road, mods will be available on console. Unique weapons, armor, companions, locations, there is alot to cover. They always have great stories and have alot of choice based consequences. Can help the good guys or bad guys type of deal.
Most important thing you need to realise, is that this game is 100% single player. That's enough from me. Get to researching.
