Because, like me, people grew up with the games. Halo combat evolved was a benchmark in gaming back in the day and halo 2 basically gave life to xbox live.
So for me the question is how could people not love halo so much?

This. Halo 2 might not have compared to pc shooters at the time - but it was life to a bunch of kids who's parents couldn't drop 1k - 2k on a gaming rig. It introduced us to competitive play for the first time ever and created a social environment never seen on a console or by the young gamers involved in it.
