To point #1, I don't allow my son to communicate w/ a mic, partly b/c he's only 12 (but he is a mature gamer for his age) and more b/c of the toxicity that is more often than not encountered on the other end. Some other passive form of communication would be highly desired and would allow him to experience more of the game.
An extension to general12912's idea, maybe the player requesting assistance could activate a beacon, making it easier for team members to locate the distress signal. There could even be a 'hot response' indicating to the distressed player that help is on it's way.
