It CAN be done but it is tricky.
I use Hung Jury
High impact sniper (Eirene or 1000yd stare etc)
Sleeper Simulant or RL using The Taikonaut
I can usually take down an ultra with this combination.
Hang back and use the cover (there is a wonderful bit that you would normally sparrow past on your way to the Devil's Lair, just at the end of the shirt tunnel) and use your long range weapons. Ignore the adds with him, stay out of their range, and just make sure you aren't surprised by any nob-participating adds...
Did I mention stay out of range?
That said, this one was the last Earth taken ultra I did and it's isn't fun. That said, I got Fourth Horseman from him this morning so I can't complain too much.

Or you can just use gjallarhorn and watch him melt. You can solo all of them that way
-
Do people still use Gjallarhorn?
-
Yes they do for stuff like that. Still a great rocket launcher for low light enemies like those taken champions.

I might need to try that.....

Normally a sound strategy, but it really does depend on where he spawns in the rocket yard. I've had him spawn in three different locations that I can recall. The first being near the crater. The second was just oustdie the building you enter to do the Kings Decay mission, and the last being in the area where the Fallen are battling the Hive. I've found the last to be the easiest as you will have your back to the Kings Decay area and nothing will come from behind you, "unless of course if the Enemy Starts Moving Against Each Other goes down." Just pop your rockets off duck behind some cover, whip out your trusty sniper and head shot away. Didn't have any ads mess with me either. Of course it always helps if there is another guardian shooting from the opposite direction :)
