I made a theory with someone else a while ago about why the vex chose Mercury and what they do with it. I'll make it short.
The reason they chose Mercury to build a supercomputer was because of it orbital patterns. One half of the planet is heavier than the other side. This causes the revolution to be equal to its rotation. One day there is a year. This is why we always see the sun on vertigo, burning shrine, and the lighthouse and it also never moves in the sky unlike on all other locations. This why the vex chose this planet.
The atmosphere also distorts the sun and makes it appear larger. This allows the vex to get more solar energy from the planet. One side is full of super-sized solar capturing spires (as seen best from the lighthouse) and the other side which is always dark is full of spires using the power of the sun to preform these quantum calculations or whatever that you were talking about.
Mercury is the perfect place to make such a device upon, this is why they put so much effort into claiming Mercury so fast after the collapse, humanity is weakened and confused, the cabal and fallen have not yet completely settled, they chose that moment to make their appearance and strike Mercury.

Just saying.

Your science is a little off there. A year on Mercury (the time it takes for the planet to complete an orbit around the sun) takes about 87 earth days. A day on Mercury (the time it takes for the planet to complete one rotation on its axis) is about 176 earth days. Mercury's days are just short of two of its years.
-
I know that... In Destiny after the terraformation it got locked in an equilibrium orbit. Before that it was as it is now but it's changed.
-
Brilliant explanation, woul just like to point out that Mercury doesn't have an atmosphere, and that the way we see the sun is because the sun actually looks like that at such a distance without having atmospheric layers distorting the refraction of the light emitted by the sun
-
In destiny, all planets were terraformed including Mercury. It gained an atmosphere in the process.
-
Riiiiiiiight. It all makes sense now
-
Lol yeah it also says in a grimoire card that the atmosphere magnifies and distorts the sun so...
-
It use to be garden world.
-
And then a vex supercomputer
-
They turned it into a machine. the vex already have minds the size of planets
-
...yeah
-
So mercury is just one link to millions maybe even billions of planet machine minds.
-
This is what I was thinking. The vex seem to have infinite reach, why focus on just one small section in the universe.
-
This is true. But the vex have a fear and that is death.
-
They're machines. How do they even fear. Whatever they do is dictated by a collective mind.
-
They are cyborgs. If you play the vault mission in the playlist. He says the vex fear their destruction.
-
Their cores are biological
-
And they're probably all the exact same thing.
-
Yes.they just have to make the planet into a machine.
