What is this topic about?
The reasoning behind this post is to discuss what has worked and what has not worked for Iron Banner 2.0. At this point I think it is generally agreed upon that the new Iron Banner has been a bad experience for most guardians. But why was it so bad? What did Bungie do that actually worked? What do they need to change? Do they need to change anything? These are questions that I want to touch on in this post. And please, use the pole up top to vote what you currently think about the new Iron Banner. Hopefully if enough people look at this topic, vote, and discuss, Bungie will see what they need to change for next months event.
What I'm not going to discuss
The Shadow Shot Glitch. I know people were having a huge issue playing against people using this, even though I was only in one game where I saw it the whole week. The thing is, Bungie knows about this. It kind of sucks they were not made aware of this until Iron Banner was underway, cause if they were, I'm sure they would have pushed it back just like they did ToO. Considering they are aware, and considering this is a game wide issue, it is not something that needs to be discussed as a fix for the next Iron Banner event.
So... What went right?
Honestly, a few things. This may just be me, but I think lag has been a much smaller issue that it has been in the past. I think alot of network manipulators have finally started getting the message or they have been banned from PVP all together. I had maybe one laggy game out of every 15 or so. The last Iron Banner I played in I played in a laggy game about every 3-4 matches, so in my opinion it is much improved. I think Bungie coming out and saying they would be monitoring this over the week and banning people was also a very good deterrent. Now is it totally fixed. No. But I also don't think it will never be totally fixed. There are people, god bless them some day with better internet, who just have really shitty connections and they want to play PvP. And they have that right to play. But I think they are being recognized better and put into games with other people with questionable connection. Ya it sounds like the video game equivalent to a concentration camp, but we honestly don't want them infecting games, so good for you Bungie.
Good items for sale. If the armor and weapons for sale are any indication, we can expect good PvP specific armor to be available every single event. For those that didn't know, the legs you can get give you more movement speed and weapon handling upon respawn, which is a fantastic perk. Weapons that were for sale had amazing rolls. Bungie did claim that the weapons that you could buy would be the premier weapons you would want. Both the side arm and pulse rifle had pretty much perfect roles for the weapons. It seems like that the day is gone where the weapon you finally needed would be for sale, with a random crappy roll that you didn't want. Along with all that, the weapons, at least from the first batch sold, appear to be very good PvP weapons, but I am sure time will tell if that is true.
So... What went wrong?
Sadly... alot went wrong. One of the biggest dick punches of this whole week was that Bungie claimed that drops would be increased, and those drops would include both items for sale, and items not for sale. It seems like, at least from my stand point and what I have seen other people say, the exact opposite is true. It seems that drops have in fact been decreased and the only items that drop are items that are currently for sale. I have yet to see anyone claim that they have gotten another item (HM, Auto Rifle, Shotgun, anything other than the ship) to drop for them while playing Iron Banner. Here is the problem with this. They have already said that the items you buy, while only 280, have the rolls that you are going to want for that item. So... then why would I want a weapon, regardless of what it attack/defense level is, if it is going to have a random roll on it? I'm not. Now would I be happy if I got another IB weapon that wasn't for sale if it didn't have a great roll... hell ya. Maybe I get lucky and I get a drop for an item with a good or god tier roll on it and if not I can at least use it can make a judgement on the item to see if I want to buy a better roll in another IB event. Right now the items that drop are basically just used to make the ones you buy stronger via infusion.
Now about the decreased drops. This is just me, but I played from LVL 0-5 and I had ZERO IB drops of any kind. Zero! The last IB I played in. I had at least 4-5 and I always averaged at least 2 IB drops per event. Never have I played through without any drops. As soon as they "increase" the drops, I get nothing. Maybe I need to keep playing at LVL 5, but why would anyone want to do that? When you go from 0-5 you don't want to keep playing on the same character or keep playing IB in general. Bungie did say the higher the level, the more stuff that is unlocked for drops and drops increase even more. Maybe if you would unlock all the items to drop starting at LVL 0 and kept the drops % the same across all levels, I would feel more inclined to keep playing, but when you grind for days to get to lvl 5 and nothing happens, there isn't much incentive to keep going.
Legendary Marks instead of glimmer? Look I understand that you want everyone to use Legendary Marks. But the "no cap" per week is honestly a load of horse crap. The way the current system is set up, it is nearly impossible to purchase both weapons and the armor piece for each separate character. Ya before I would have to glimmer farm a bit if I wanted to buy everything, but it was at least possible to do. Now I have to essentially rely on getting drops from playing, but we have already established that drops rarely happen and if they are a weapon the roll isn't likely going to be desirable. With this, Bungie simply needs to reduce the amount of Legendary Marks each item costs. Cause at this point it is nearly impossible to purchase everything, and it is impossible to purchase everything and infuse weapons and armor at the same time. Plus god forbid you were saving up to buy one of the good weapons from a faction. Now you are stuck waiting another week for that while you save up to buy the IB gear that Bungie has promised would drop.
So what changes need to be made?
As I pointed out, several changes need to be made to how gear is distributed. Gear is the #1 only reason people play IB. Bungie promised things were going to work one way with gear, and it ended up working the exact opposite as was promised. They need to increase the drops even more than what they claimed they did and they need to unlock all the weapons and armor like they promised. They need to have all these items unlocked to drop as soon as you get into IB and the drop rates need to be the same regardless of what level you are on. They also need to drop how much each item costs to purchase from IB or at least change it back to Glimmer. If you are going to tell people that the gear that is ready for purchase is at the rolls they are going to want, then you are going to have to make it so they can actually purchase that gear. If these changes are actually made, I think the next Iron Banner will be a success. I think it will finally be better than Iron Banner 1.0. If these changes are not made... then I don't see a good amount of people returning to play the game mode, a game mode that people were already avoiding because of how broken it has been in the past.
So these are all my thoughts on the matter. What do you think? Am I right, am I wrong, did I miss anything? Comment. Pass this around. Bungie isn't ever going to change anything for the better unless we make them aware of what is broken.
EDIT: We are over 1000 votes with about 18% saying IB 2.0 is better, about 18% saying it is about the same, and about 64% saying that IB 2.0 is worse than the original.
EDIT 2: Some people are calling me out saying that Bungie never said there would be drops other than what was being sold that week. I got my information from this post about this very subject. https://www.bungie.net/7_Destiny-Update---10132015/en/News/News?aid=13706 The quote is, "End-of-match rewards now include both weapons and armor (including items available on Lord Saladin)." This lead me to believe that other weapons and armor would drop during the event and I believe that if they in fact did not intend for items not being sold to drop then they worded this line POORLY to say the least. This was the post I read when I was going into Iron Banner.
EDIT 3: I'm getting a lot of people saying, "I guess you had bad luck... RNG wasn't on your side, ect, ect." I just want to make this clear that I did not create this post because I personally didn't get loot to drop, I made it based on the vaste majority of players who didn't have loot drop and the confusion created by bungie because of conflicting statements on loot. This post isn't meant to be woe is me, but rather it is meant to gather input from the community on their experience in IB so see what has and has not worked and how Bungie can improve the experience.
EDIT 4: So bungie just flat out admitted that the loot drops were broken. Fix should be in for the next Iron Banner.

5 RepliesEdited by kcjames1138: 10/19/2015 5:35:28 PMTraditionally you could get IB drops that were offered in prior weeks. My guess, we saw less drops because the only gear in the table is that being sold this week. Next IB we will have this week's and that week's. Twice the available loot. A few months down the line, we could be seeing a lot of drops. That's my hope anyway, based on what they said. They do need to drastically increase blue drops. You can get way more doing strikes. They should make them drop from guardian kills like they do pve kills. The total randomness that doesn't reward skill at the end sucks.

IB should be more rewarding than straight crucible and it isn't anywhere close to being AS rewarding. Simples.
-
3 rank 5 characters. I had 1 pair of 280 boots drop for my warlock and that's IT. If I'm going to get 3 characters there and get 1 drop them what's the point?
-
The drop rate sucked. It really did. We can't reroll iron banner weapons anymore so it just hurts even more to only get one weapon drop the whole time I played.
-
5 RepliesThe biggest change they need to make is to make the weapons and armor 300, period.

I voted this iron banner to be worse than the previous iron banners, but the reason why is because crucible in general is absolutely broken. Pulse rifles are by far the go to weapon since autorifles and hand cannons have been nerfed into the ground with the exception of hawkmoon which is still good. Scout rifles are a distant second but still good in capable hands. In year 2 supers seem to be charging way too fast, and the heavy AOE of our new supers combined with the typically small maps with small corridors makes for easy kills. The rampant glitching is typical but this particular batch is very potent. Matchmaking is terrible, I usually play solo and get matched with other solo players, the enemy team is regularly 3-4 man fireteams +2, and even when teams are broken up the general lack of interest in this event makes pairing up against the last group who absolutely rekt me the last game is back quite often. The gear is absolutely beautiful (like always) but the attack/ defense values are useless. 280 does nothing for players looking for gear they can take into a raid. the random drops from what I have seen are way too infrequent, and other than the ship nothing drops that the vendor is not selling (when previously you could find something he wasnt selling ie. timurs lash, jolders hammer etc. in an off cycle drop) TL;DR better map variety needed, needs better level gear, more drops, weapons and supers need rebalancing (AGAIN)

I agree completely

I had a bounty to get 1 win. A couple first place finishes later and I'm still looking...

My experience wasn't too bad and I think it's because I didn't expect much going in. I'm a teenager and my parents pay for Internet, which is great. The problem however is that the Internet we have is horrible and there is nothing better available in our area. I get 5mb down on a perfect day and that's when I'm the only one using it. Regardless I was already expecting to be placed with other laggy people like always. I also made a new character to experience the story with the new quest system. I alternate between playing a lot and then hardly playing at all. I was playing at around 285 light and only felt a small disadvantage compared to higher leveled guardians. I personally think there should be more of an advantage but maybe that's just me. All last year I only received one drop, Radegast's Fury. Maybe I was super unlucky, but I was happy when a butt cape dropped when I was around rank 2. I ended up at max rep and received the titan mark, and bought both emblems, the boots, and the pistol. I actually like how I only had enough for the pulse or the pistol and had to choose, but I can only imagine trying to buy items for three different characters. Overall I enjoyed this Iron Banner and my only complaint is the lag. I know my internet isn't the best but I hardly lag when playing BOII on the same console. I can't wait to try out the Red Death/Pistol combo.

2 RepliesThe hunter glitch was a big turn off for me. Unfortunately I ran into it a lot... and needless to say I t bagged a lot of them. Other than that I'd say the weapon usage was pretty linear, from my point of view at least. I can't say that I didn't enjoy the challenge of running like a mad man every time I heard a sunbreaker activate or trying to counter unlimited shaddowshots though. Overall it was a very interesting iron banner and the only thing I'd like to see change aside from the obvious is a greater variety of weapon usage. Correct me if I'm wrong (which I'm sure you are all too eager to do,) but the weapon of choice for the majority was Red Death, Hung Jury, or the other crucible scout.

New bounties are Wack hit rank 3 finished two reg bounties and the big bounty when straight to 4 which finished the other bounty and went straight to 5 wtf lol
-
I dunno, I got the pulse to drop with rangefinder and glass half full. Absolute fuggin beast in pvp and pve. I had no trouble getting to rank 5, no real grinding, didn't even play every day. Just did two of the weekly bounties and most of the dailies. I'm just disappointed at the lack of vendor gear altogether, a class item and one other armour piece is pretty poor.
-
Ya, I vote for worse. I don't really care about drops - there are plenty of ways to get drops in the game. What I didn't like is that this just felt like a variation on regular crucible, but the earned rewards didn't really mean much this go round. As well it seemed like there was not really much point to play until Sunday - at which point the buffs combined with using the bounties and your vanguard rep boost, meant you could basically hit rank 5 with about 7 wins - not all that hard to get in one solid session. So it just felt like less of an "achievement". So I played it, but didn't really care about the result. Yay, rank 5... um. yay. Same shaders as last time. Meh. I think you captured the main points, although the rolls on the gear... , "sort of" worth it but nothing you can't really do with other gear sets and not worth the legendary purple points. For IB to be something to actually look forward to, and really be a test of skills - I'd like to see a "top 12" leaderboard for IB, with a 3-game "final" played by the top 12 players, and then raid-level gear for the winning 6. That would be truly some gear to be proud of, and another path to 310+, which I think the game could use. Plus I'd probably want to watch a twitch stream of those final games. It would be like a cool way to tie in that "player of the week" feature on the bungie website, but with a tie to the actual Iron Banner tournament. I'd kinda like to be able to see the "legends" in action. Overall I like the idea of IronBanner - but it seems like it's the least well thought through aspects of the game (and... well, that's saying something when it comes to Destiny). It's still a tonne of fun to play but right now IB doesn't differentiate enough from regular crucible except in sort of bad ways like only ever being Control every season.

1 ReplyPower did not matter in this one.

I got boots for a drop and that was all. Granted, I skipped playing at the top of rank 4 when I cashed in all 3 weekly bounties and went straight to rank 5 and bought the pulse rifle. I think it's a lot easier to rank up now. You can hit Rank 5 by sunday just by turning in bounties everyday.
-
I stopped playing IB halfway through the week when I realized it wasn't worth the effort. The drops just aren't worthwhile anymore.
-
I didn't see the shadowshot glitch as much as I thought I would. I only came across it 3 times. The drops were horrendous. I got a cloak and probably the worst possible roll on a sidearm. Ended up just buying Lord Salad-tosser's pulse rifle and sidearm.
-
1. Subclass balance is a main issue. I suggest to slightly tone down Sunbreaker and Stormcaller. But instead of messing this subclasses up, bring the other subclasses on par. 2. Weapon balance. Hand cannons and maybe fusion rifles need more love. Less aim assist on snipers and a slight damage reduction to pulse rifles.
-
The drop rate is all i think needs to be changed. Only dropping what Saladin is selling is rly lame, especially as the event is only once a month... Who wasnt looking forward to those new helmets and chest pieces? We will have to wait at least another month to maybe get them... And at 280 light while most of us will have 320 gear from hard raid by then...
-
I would say IB has more or less been the same for me. I was expecting to get more gear than I did. I got the cloak and boots for my hunter and then purchased the side arm and pulse rifle. I think I got one legendary boot engram but it was much more lack luster than I was expecting based on what Bungie said. On the plus side I experienced way less lag and wtf moments than in the past, do I feel like there was less lag but I didn't play a ridiculous amount and I had friends who were complaining about lag too so I am undecided if there was an actual improvent. The SS glitch I don't really consider this to impact IB as it would of still been happening if IB wasn't happening. Just an exploit/cheat that would of happened anyway. All in all I don't play a lot of pvp unless IB is around and even then I get one character to rank 5 and that is it. I'm hoping the gear drop rates really do improve so it doesn't feel like such a hassle in the future as my overall PvP experience seems to be hit and miss.
