http://ktla.com/2015/10/05/gov-brown-signs-medical-aid-in-dying-bill-legalizing-assisted-suicide-in-california/ California just signed in the End of Life Option Act, based on the Death With Dignity Act in Oregon, becoming the fifth state to legalize assisted suicide for the terminally ill.
I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain,” he wrote in the message, addressed to state Assembly members. “I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill.
-California Governor Jerry Brown on his decision to sign in the bill So what are your thoughts on this? Do you support this and would you like to see assisted suicide legalized nationwide or are you against it? Assisted suicide has obviously different circumstances than normal suicide, so if you have strongly negative opinions about those who commit suicide, are your opinions any different about those who take advantage of assisted suicide? I myself have no issue with it, as it's an option I would be grateful to have if it came down to it.

If you have the right to life then you have the right to die. When you are in a vegetative state and other people have to choose for you, that may cause problems, but none that sufficiently rigorous checks and balances couldn't handle. Same with people being 'pressured' into doing it. I think it's barbaric that some people who have lived here all their lives are forced to go abroad when they want to die.

      • If you are a mentally fit person with a terminal illness and you have only about four months left to live and you are in debilitating pain with no hope of recovery. If you are against this please tell me how keeping someone alive in horrendous pain with no hope of survival is a good thing?

        • Having seen many people through my line of work kept alive in excruciating pain, dying slowly and unable to leave their hospital bed in the final weeks or even months of their life, it is brilliant to see the idea of assisted dying take hold. The term Suicide implies as a result of temporary anguish, Assisted Dying is much more appropriate, as the patient is in the final stages of life, and we are in effect not ending their life, but assisting them to die. For anyone who is against this concept, take a moment to think
you spend every day in an uncomfortable hospital bed, in a ward full of people dying the same as you. Vomit and feces are all you ever smell, you cant sleep due to the constant activity and announcements, let alone due to the pain. If you want to go to the toilet its by a pan on your bed, where 2 people have to hold you in position, then roll you to wipe your ass. You never feel truly clean. Your food comes but its only lukewarm, hospital food. swallowing is hard now so you just drink meal replacers instead anyhow. Daily doses of pain medication fry your brain, they become inaffective so they switch you to more potent but debilitatig agents. These cause you to vomit, requiring more medicine to be administered that causes your facial muscles to spasm. Your family come and visit, slowly but surely the peripheral friends drop off, then some family, they feel guilty that they cant spent time with you and you feel guilty for making them feel that way. Days are lonely and boring. You've read every book, watched every daytime soap, informericial and talk show. You have nothing but your own thoughts, and the odd hospital volunteer who never really stays around long enough to get a conversation going. This goes on, and on, and on, until you begin to go into respiritory failure. Your lungs fill with fluid, the oxygen masks help at first but slowly they run out of options. Your last few days are spent gasping for breath, your family running in and out of the hospital as you go from bad to worse. Their last monents and memories Arent of you happy at your grandsons wedding, or tucking into thanksgiving dinner. Its you, the decorated soldier, the long servincg police officer, the esteemed lawyer, football coach or former track star. Lying immobile, in bed, gasping for what may be your last breath. You dont even remember anything but that hospital bed as you pass away.
• For me it's not a simple "for" or "against". I'm the type who feels that if there's even the slightest, infinitesimal chance of recovery, it's worth taking. That you should fight until the fight is forcefully taken from you. I can't understand why someone would willingly want to "give up". In the other hand, I can't understand why someone would want to give up. I can't comprehend how much pain and suffering they must be going through to bring them to the conclusion that ending their life is better than holding on to some, though faint to the point of being all but non-existent, glimmer of hope. Who am I to say, "This isn't worth it"? I have no choice but to choose, "I'm not sure."

            • There was a big push for it in a Canadian province last year; however, it was quickly quelled and it's no longer relevant. Our federal election is in two weeks, and some interesting issues such as the decriminalization/legalization of marijuana and assisted suicide will be brought up after we name a new PM. I'm all for it. It's your life, your body. The people treating you very likely don't understand the pain you're in, whether it be physical or psychological. It's barbaric how people get in a tizzy when this issue is brought up.

Kill yourself slowly with poor lifestyle choices and nobody bats an eye Kill yourself in an instant in the name of sport and you're glorified But kill yourself in an instant by your own decision and everyone loses their minds

                • It is needed, but good measures should be set up to prevent abuse or misuse of the act.

                  • Ok, the title got me confused for a sec. Assisted suicide meaning if someone is in horrible pain 24/7 and there is nothing that can e done, yes i think that is ok But if someone is just committing suicide and someone else is assisting them (they are committing suicide for no reason- just an example) no i dont think thats ok
