World First Full Interview

On the Bungie Blog, there is an an interview with the Fireteam that earned World First status in the King’s Fall Raid. For truly hardcore readers who want to know everything these Guardians had to say, here’s a more comprehensive edit... What did you do to prepare for this Raid? Gothalion: Strikes. Strikes. Strikes. Grind up that light level. Outside of virtual gear score, forging a strong friendship with every member of the raid group was the most important part. Broman: Personally I spent 50+ hours grinding on my main just to get ready including one 24 hour stint on stream! It was brutal but worth it! We also tried to play all the new content as a team as much as we could to get a feel for how we'd each play the new content as a team! Teawrex: After completing the story and the starting quests, most of us just went into our own respective farming groups. I found the most fortune with farming the Court of Oryx encounters and gearing from there. The nightfall snagged me The Stag early on and I slowly geared up from there. Charionna: I focused exclusively on my Hunter going into TTK knowing that I would play it during the raid. On top of stockpiled public event packages and high experience bounties, I also saved up materials to upgrade any and all Hunter gear I could get my hands on in TTK. Rebelize: Personally, I'm a quest-a-holic. I did every quest that wasn't pvp related looking for as much gear rewards as possible before the raid came out. After that, I farmed strikes and Court of Oryx with my fellow raid members hoping for some good gear to use for infusion. In total, I think I spent 45+ hours preparing for this raid. FallingCow/Gunny: I spent as much time as I could running strikes both Normal and Heroic, doing as many of the quests as I could, and having a fun time doing it. It was quite a grind to get what we thought was raid ready in time for the raid which was 4 days after launch. How did you go about selecting the Raiders on your dream team? Gothalion: There was no selection. This was just a core group that slowly formed since Destiny day one. Some of us did VoG together. Most of us did Crota's End together. All of us did Trials of Osiris and Prison of Elders together. The group selected itself. Broman: The folks on our team are all longtime friends or brothers for me! I've been playing with Gothalion and Teawrex since launch even did our first VoG clear together! Gunny, Rebelize and Charionna were all viewers and supporters of our streams for a while that we clicked with the first few times we played. Teawrex: The running joke we've had was that our group was always "world's first to fun!" As long as we were having a good time and putting on a good show for our friends and viewers, we accomplished what we'd set out to do. Charionna: Going into the raid, we all decided that Teawrex would be making the calls and deciding on strategy. Having a single leader really paid off when there were disagreements because he had the final say and everyone agreed to it. Rebelize: There wasn't really a selection process. We had all raided with each other before, and we meshed really well both as a raid team and as a group of friends just looking to enjoy new content. FallingCow/Gunny: We just all kinda agreed that we would be on a raid team since The Dark Below Hard More Crota. We've been friends for such a long time it was agreed upon without anyone really saying anything. What was the darkest and most hopeless moment? Gothalion: There was a moment when I realized your raid team had created the "popular" (come on, America) TV show "Wipe Out" in the raid. My greatest fear had been realized. Broman: I'd say our most hopeless moment was fighting Oryx and not understanding which mechanic we were missing to do the big damage after detonating the corrupted light. Everyone on the team was out of ideas until Rebelize just casually asked if we were still shooting Oryx while we were detonating, and that was the big difference maker for us in the fight. Teawrex: I'd say it was when we were facing off against Oryx for the later part of our raid. Sometimes we could get the mechanics to work for us, and then sometimes nothing would work at all with seemingly no change in our strategy. Eventually we figured out that missing piece and killed The Taken King once and for all. Charionna: [Spoilers] During the Oryx encounter, we were detonating the Blights properly, but not damaging Oryx. We thought that we had to time them perfectly, but Oryx seemed immune to any kind of attack we tried to throw at him. It wasn’t until later that Rebelize realized what we were doing wrong, and we figured out that we had to keep attacking Oryx the entire time, even after staggering him. Rebelize: My darkest and most hopeless moment was during the Oryx encounter, when we couldn't figure out why the orbs were not damaging Oryx. Even after determining the right strategy, we still spent a long time trying to execute it due to not understanding this problem. FallingCow/Gunny: I think our darkest moment was when we were struggling at Oryx to find out how to actually damage him. Once we realized the mistakes we were making (no spoilers!) the darkest hour turned into our brightest one! How did your team go about overcoming the challenges you faced? Gothalion: Patience and Fun. Every member of the group, at one point or another, made a call or unraveled a puzzle. Everyone made a bone head mistake and was razzed for it. But everyone had fun and no one got frustrated or mad. Nobody likes a raid lead that barks at them. On the same note, nobody wants to be surrounded by people who won’t help them grow and isn't afraid to call them on mistakes. It's a careful balance. Broman: Communication and a cool head. We designated one person to make final calls on things (Teawrex) but everyone was allowed to give input and challenge ideas if they had some of their own. At one point or another each of us made a big call in the raid that pushed us forward! Teawrex: Communication and teamwork. We tried our best to not shut out any ideas anyone had and tested as many theories as we could in the shortest amount of time possible. As cliché as it sounds, teamwork makes the dream work. Charionna: We remained calm the entire time. Everyone knew that yelling or fighting would only make things worse, so we took breaks often to keep ourselves from getting too stressed when things weren’t working out. Once we figured out how the mechanics worked for a fight, it only took another try or two to take the boss down. Rebelize: We talked about everything. If someone had an idea they thought might work, we tried it. The raid was a team effort and we struggled through every challenge as a team to overcome it. FallingCow/Gunny: We just all kinda agreed that we would be on a raid team since The Dark Below Hard More Crota. We've been friends for such a long time it was agreed upon without anyone really saying anything. Would you try this Raid with randos you had never met before? Gothalion: Once more people see guides and up their light level there are a lot of aspects of the raid that could be done with randoms, sure. Would it be as fun as with my close friends? Maybe not. Broman: I can't wait to try this raid with a Pick Up Group! Teawrex: This raid requires a lot of communication and teamwork that you can achieve with other random players, but it's much more difficult. I may down the road do it with others, but it'll never give me that same satisfaction as beating it with friends. Charionna: King’s Fall is by far the toughest raid yet. In previous raids, I could have groups follow simple instructions while I did most of the heavy lifting. Doing King’s Fall in an entirely pick-up group will certainly be a challenge. Rebelize: In a month or two, I wouldn't mind running the raid with people I've never met before. I think by that time, I'll be confident in my knowledge of the raid enough to guide and coach people through it. FallingCow/Gunny: Within the first month? Probably not, there are a lot of mechanics and execution that our group is still working on refining for the raid. And before I can confidently go into the Dreadnaught with random viewers, I want to make sure I have everything down and understood so I can be as much help to my viewers as I can. What would you suggest to those players who have yet to attempt King’s Fall? Gothalion: Be patient. Read and watch guides. Subscribe to Datto. Broman: Make sure you are ready to work hard as a team. This raid is a full on team effort nobody is going to be able to be a non-participant. Communicate, Stay Focused and Have Fun! Teawrex: Don't give up when you feel like you can't win. If you're going in blind, communicate more with your Fireteam and try to figure out the missing piece of the puzzle to conquer whatever challenge you face. Charionna: Gear up, get a group you enjoy playing with, and practice. Finding a group you enjoy playing with is key because group synergy is way more important than a single player’s skill, especially in a raid that requires insane amounts of teamwork, communication, and coordination. Rebelize: Find yourself a group of people who you mesh well with and who you can see yourself enjoying the experience with. Communication in this raid is important, and having people there who you enjoy playing with makes the communication feel more natural, and you're going to spend less time getting angry over failure and spend more time having fun. FallingCow/Gunny: If you want to go in blind, make sure you have 5 friends that you can enjoy the ride with. If you research the fights and strategies beforehand, make sure to bring a high damage and impact sniper.
