PS4 controller input sticking + voice breakup

Greetings Bungie folks, This might be a case of correlation implying causation, however I think there might be something more to it, and specific to Destiny. Myself, some friends and a few others have been experiencing issues on the PS4 with our controllers. The issues is that, in random 5-15 second bursts, inputs will stick (or not respond, depending on what buttons/sticks/etc were held at the point the issue occurs) and at the same time, any voice input will cut out/break up. Being software devs, we took some time and tried to figure out what was going on using methods at our disposal, which of course are not many. What we have so far, is that the issue occurs: Firm datapoints: - Most notably, only in Destiny, only post-Taken King. Did not occur during 2.x "preview" week, nor at any point prior to that. We've tried many games (even the PS4 web browser), single and multiplayer, PS4 Party chat or not, headphones wired to the controller, wireless headphones, no headphones. We can't reproduce it anywhere else, at all, so far. - Regardless of the model of PS4, and regardless of the model of (official Sony) controller. - Regardless of whether you have a headset plugged into the controller or are using a wireless headset; or no headset at all. - Regardless of sources of 2.4GHz interference (WiFi networks, microwaves, the usual). Case in point, two testers are located in the countryside and theirs is the only WiFi network available; issue occurred with the sole WiFi AP powered down. - Regardless of in-game activity. Occurs in orbit on character screen, and occurs with multiple enemies and characters onscreen in the game world. - If you are in a PS4 Party chat, the issues with input are always accompanied by voice input breaking up/cutting out. No parties involved in our testing rounds have changed any hardware or settings before or after Taken King launch. Same hardware, same physical positioning (w/r/t potential interference being a factor), etc. Soft datapoints: - Seems to occur more frequently when connected to a PS4 Party chat and/or with controller-wired headphones. Need to test this further to see if it's a variable. Have not tested Destiny-specific fireteam or other voice chat. - Occurs even when powering up the PS4 controller while wired to USB, ostensibly to force the controller to act as a wired input device (at least per ancillary reports that this works; I don't have any physical USB analysis tools to see for myself). Given the amount of time that all of us collectively put into Destiny, it's an extremely noticeable issue that we've not been able to figure out the root cause of yet. It remains a very random issue however which makes it all the more difficult to debug. On average, and this is a pretty rough calculation, it occurs once every 90 minutes, to varying degrees. Examples of the issue: - Walking forward while rotating a few degrees. Analog inputs will get stuck, forcing you to run in a semicircle. Attempts to break out by moving the sticks will result in being forced in the new direction. I've personally seen this last for a good 10 seconds. - Jumps with button held. Jumps will cut out dropping you, as if you let the button go. On landing, can't jump or move for a few seconds; if input is possible, input is very erratic. - Moving cursor on character screen. Cursor can get stuck moving in one direction for a second or three. - And cases like these, when involved in a PS4 Party chat, are always accompanied by voice cut out/break up. It's really super weird. I'd normally be the first to call it interference, and the first to say it's likely not related to Destiny, but at this point can't ignore that it's somehow, even very tangentially, Destiny 2.x related. So, throwing this all out there. Perhaps other folks can report in with their datapoints if they've had a similar experience. Maybe we're all crazy, but at this point pretty sure it's a legitimate issue somewhere in the PS4 Destiny experience.

  • This is happening to all our controllers. It's both my husband's and myself we each have two controllers both my new blue and my black one and his new red are having this issue. This post was dated 9-15-15. Started happening after the rise of the iron dlc came out. I've tried every thing turning all the WiFi devices off and trying it it's still happening. I even cleaned my ps4 to no success. Frustrated any ideas would be good.

    • I can confirm this issue. The exact same thing is happening to me. I just bought a new controller (20th Anniversary Edition) and the issue is still present.
