Official Feedback on The Taken King - The Story

The one about the story. Better story has been a big request from the community since Destiny first launched last year. Many of you have gotten through the initial story missions. There are still some untold elements in the end game, but what are your thoughts on the story so far. What do you like, what do you dislike? What do you think about the characters, are they more interesting than in the past? Did you enjoy the new cut scenes? Let us know what you think.

  • it was definitely better than the year one story, but nothing interesting ever happens. there's always a big threat of some bad guy and we always defeat them. the bad guy is always portrayed as a big threat but we always stop him with no losses. (i guess the queen would count but it literally happened 2 minutes into the game and had hardly any impact). also the game is always shrouded in mystery which can be interesting to an extent, but gets really boring and tedious if you never learn anything about the main story, and keep everything a secret. we always seem to be learning about the next "threat" to come in the next dlc instead of the main story.

    • Story is good. I would like to see a correlation of the story from year one to year two. Since it is still part of the same storyline, all the questions that year one presented to oils be great if they were answered. Things like the stranger, where the black garden is, what the black garden is, the correlation of the thorn and the black garden, where the strain her came from, more details on the vex timeline, etc. Also, the wolf pack was carried through time and now they are gone. I feel like that was left open ended. There are a few more that I can't think of but I would ask the team to revisit the grimoire cards from the beginning as they leave many questions that would help make the original story make sense.

    • I enjoyed it. Nathan Fillion was great! Nolan North also did a wonderful job with the new material. I specifically enjoyed the dialog in the Last Rites mission. Fillion's line about the Hive being in the middle of some kind of funeral made me chuckle. I also felt a sense of urgency when you're exposed and Ghost yells "everything is corrupted." Cutscenes were great. Quests were great too. I'd like to see more of everything TTK has going for it in future installments.

    • Nathan fillion was -blam!-ing gold! Zavala was awkward when in the sunbreaker class mission he tells you they hate him. A weird soft moment from a guy who doesn't give that vibe well. I would have expected him to be succinct and just say there was a disagreement that has left bad blood. Great story otherwise, I feel as though the grimiore needs a reinvention. I read all of the book of sorrow before even playing the taken king and I felt it really allowed me to understand who was who and what was going on. Names actually make sense after reading the sorrows in its entirety. Instead of assuming it was a randomly generated name I was facing, it was "Oh this is so and so, who is related to Crota." Allowed for a deeper relation and immersion in the story. I'm a fiend for lore and backstory, but not everyone is. Also I'm pretty sad that praedyth was reintroduced and then killed off in a single mission. He was one of my biggest curiosities and it felt like a flop.

    • Story = shaping up. I like how ya'll wove the TTK quests into the overall story. After beating Oryx in the story mission...it feels like you are actually contributing to something for the build up to raid.

    • Cutscenes were present cosmo tell the team well done lol Room for more cutscenes though, more that include your guardian? How about some loading screens that aren't just the ass of a worthless ship :)

      The presenation value is fantastic and really makes this dlc feel worthy of the price Seeing ships crashland near the character, and other similar scripted events like a collapsing bridge really added a sense of immersion to Destiny that was sometimes lacking before--it helped me become more invested in the story as I played. The writing seems better as well, with more fleshed out characters that express their own quirks, desires, etc. Nathan Fillion stands out as a voice actor, but Nolan North does a great job as well, especially with the new Taken King material. North can seem a bit awkward with the original material, especially after spending a year listening to Dinklage's take, but I think that's tough to deal with because the original writing seemed tuned more with Dinklage's take anyways. I love the new dynamic ideas like the third person stealth mission, platforming, and especially the secrets that come complete with additional dialogue from various characters (the black spindle quest stands out). For the first time, i'm beginning to remember characters' names because they are actually starting to sound and act more like people. It's a great direction and I hope Bungie goes even further down this road in future installments. Thank you to so many creative people who put this together; your art has brought me a lot of joy over the past couple weeks and I'm definitely a satisfied customer.

    • The story is much better. There are still a lot of questions from year one especially about the speaker and the traveler. Would like to get more context as to what happened to the queen and her brother as well.

      It's an improvement, but it's still on cheesy action movie type dialogue and absolutely nothing of possible interest in this game world is being explored while lackluster new shit is always added. The "quests" are still mostly challenges that are based around arbitrarily forced group-work. Bungie is just adding things like "kill Alak-Hul and his two other knight-reskin bosses within 30 sec to get the exotic" type shit instead actually adding real content. Do you guys really need to be told that your story is still not much better than the Resident Evil Movies? If it's that hard for you guys to create, then please, ask me for ideas. But ask me directly, not on a forum.

        Story is fine. Serviceable, I'd say. It's not going to win any literary awards or anything, and still relies on the bombast of a Hollywood production more than on smaller vignettes of humanity. The half voice overs that occur when turning in quests are really odd, too. Why cap the audio after a sentence? More importantly, you guys really need to get your social tools in shape. Kind of appalled that I came back after a year and little to nothing has changed in that regard. No LFG in game. No decent optional MM. It's like the development team is clueless about what every other massively multiplayer game on the plant ships with these days. Here's hoping for Destiny 3.0?

      • There is actually a decent story line told during TTK and I found myself telling my wife, "Wow, for the first time I feel like a clear and cohesive story is actually being told." So, I feel like the story telling for the events that take place during TTK is actually really good. I hope we see much more of this in future DLC. However, we still need crucial backstory, and the lack thereof does bring the TTK story down. What happened during the collapse? We still don't know. Thousands of cars full of dead bodies cover the roads around the Cosmodrome. Something catastrophic and sudden obviously took place. We know this because all of those people are still in their cars just sitting where they were slain. WTF HAPPENED????? What happened that was so powerful that it killed tens of thousands of people instantly but didn't have a blast shock wave strong enough to destroy or toss the vehicles, or crush the walls to powder????? A 50 megaton nuke would certainly have killed all of those people, but the cars would NOT still be sitting there, the starships would NOT be standing on their pads. What was the collapse? Throw us a bone here! Where did all these alien races come from? How did the Awoken (obviously once human) come to exist? We don't know anything at all!!! Guys, do a good detailed cinematic video like those that make the TTK story so good. Make it available on our navigator. Give us crucial backstory so we can have real context for events. Answer some of these key questions. It is OK to have mystery, but right now there aren't enough clues to figure out anything at all. And the key to a successful mystery is that there are enough clues to figure it out as we go. Right now, it is an ocean of question marks where one occasionally finds a tiny island of answer, but not nearly enough.

      • Will the Traveler's name ever be mentioned in any DLC or future DLC? I'm starting to forget what the original story is..

        • The cutscenes were wonderful and Cade is my favorite character in destiny now. The story itself was a massive improvement, but the meat of it, in my opinion, is found in the grimoire cards as usual. I think it would greatly benefit the casual player to somehow include the grimoire cards u -game. All in all, amazing work.

        • I think some videos were a little misplaced. For example, how can we get to see what happened to the Awoken in Saturn if we still didn't know about the Dreadnought (we got to know about it and the Taken on the first mission in Phobos; the video preceeds this mission). I also agree with Bloodraven that our character should be the ones speaking to Cayde and the others when it's a radio talk. The Ghost should only inform us of things or complement the dialogue. It feels a little like "hey! I'm weilding a gun here, can't talk to you so talk to the hand (er, Ghost)". P.S: Give some minutes with Cayde and a gun. I have some height issues to settle with him.

        • Loved the story just wish my characters had some lines felt like they were just along for the ride and that the ghost was the main character, mostly because of the back and forth between the ghost and cayde-6 in mission

            • They story is much improved. It's a shame it wasn't always this way. I like that our guardians appear to be significant to the story now, as opposed to just seemed like a nameless grunt before, but why don't we ever talk? We are only talked [i]to[/i]

              • I enjoyed the story, liked the cinematics incorporated into them, the ease of one story mission to the next and having the ghost or others talk to you throughout. Story from Vanilla till now, improved. If the next sequence of DLCs are the same way of story telling, then i cant wait.

              • I enjoyed the story much more with the added cutscenes and interaction. As mentioned by others I would love some interactive grimoire somewhere while we are going. The missions were definitely better especially regicide. Lots of previews of the raid in the Crota mission as well as really enjoyed the taken. Not in story but the taken champions on patrol are cool as well.
