My clan and I recently decided that we wanted to expand our clan so we can find new people, make new friends and always have people to do activities with once TTK releases. The first order of business was to come up with a clan name that would sound appealing and inspire people who are not already in a clan, to spend the time to create a bungie account and register for the clan. After a long time of brainstorming, we came up with a few promising ideas. The downside was that the best of them were already taken. No big deal, they got it first, I totally understand that. What did bother me was that none of the groups we saw had enough people to be active clans and weren't even active anymore in destiny. So my question is, if a group has abandoned the game and/or the group, is their name eventually forfeited? Or do they get to keep it forever, even when they are no longer playing?

if a group has abandoned the game and/or the group, is their name eventually forfeited?
Group status on bungie.net isn't tied to in-game Destiny activity. A group can exist on bungie.net and have nothing to do with Destiny, there are many of them. Additionally, Groups don't auto-delete themselves. For a group to be removed, all group members have to leave the group and the last one out will be asked "are you sure" because they're the last ones. Unfortunately, if users are inactive, there is nothing to be done about it. You could always try messaging the Group Founder and seeing if you get a response, but there is no system in place that automatically removes itself.
