Witcher 3 fighting mechanics worst ever?

The world design is awesome, it has a very indepth story, but the combat makes it nearly unplayable. Anyone else feel the same? Edit: I should specify, this really only holds true with bosses. Fighting and dodging the open world enemies is enjoyable. Boss fights seem overly tedious. Not being able to move fluidly during boss battles is quite frustrating.

  •
the combat makes it nearly unplayable. Anyone else feel the same?
The Witcher 3 could use a better indicator of when enemies are going to attack, especially the monsters you don't encounter very often. Maybe the camera is pulled back too far. Also, the game can get spammy with the number of enemies attacking you at once. In an open area, the results can be brutal. The quick dodge and roll away buttons are the meat and potatoes of Witcher 3 combat. You want Geralt to doge or roll behind enemies for massive damage. The block button would work except the stronger enemies have attacks that break your block. I put all my combat experience points into the fast attack option. Also, fight on horseback if you can. Just keep running back and force and one slash killing human sized enemies. The signs are also essential. My favorite is the Axii sign which can make an enemy an ally. Keep enemies at a far enough distance from Geralt and have them kill each other. The real loser of The Witcher 3 combat is the crossbow. It just doesn't do enough damage to be worth while.

  • Eh I disagree. I think it's just fighting how people aren't used to. Dodging doesn't mean you won't get hit, just like reality. There's not really invincibility frames like in almost every other fighting/hack slash game. Fighting multiple enemies is tough, you have to really watch every person. Just cause your doing something cool doesn't mean someone won't attack you. I think ppl get really use to like, batman mechanics where enemies attack simultaneously. And one counter can knock away all 3. Enemies can block. Attack. Wait. Fight smart. I think it's great. It's also one of the great rogs, where you can be completley overwhelmed and under leveled and still fight super high level

  • Yeah, witcher 3 combat is pretty crappy. It gets a bit better as you learn it though. But it still sucks. But its far superior to the previous witcher games, and it is way way more enjoyable then what skyrim had.

  • Nope I think the fighting is really fluid and pretty rewarding. Especially for an open world RPG

  • I found after a day or two playing it I learned to love it and unless your fighting one Target or flying targets I wouldn't use the lock on feature it messes u up some times

    • *long drawn out yes-no-maybe wishy-washy noise* In short, the combat isn't bad. I'm still uncomfortable with it though. I've played a handful of combat focused games in the past 10 years (not including fighting games like Street Fighter). The primary being WoW, where my movement has little to do with my character's innate dodge and parry functions. After that I picked up Dragon Age: Origins, which was much the same, unless you were running away to heal yourself or something. Then there was Bloodborne (and shortly thereafter, all the Souls games)... The Souls games were my first real foray into active melee combat where my blocks, dodges and parties were fully under my control and really effected the outcome of fights. Granted the reaction times and rolling that your characters in the Souls games did were not entirely realistic and only the roll rate itself was really effected by your gear. Those games all but ruined me when I try to play anything else in the medieval melee genre. I gave Shadow of Mordor a solid try. The character basically felt like they were stuck in knee deep mud the whole time I was fighting. The parry prompt was about the only thing that saved that game for me and I still haven't really gotten into it. When I first booted up Witcher 3, it felt much the same. I was initially disappointed and always felt a little out of control during combat. The new control scheme helps a little, but Geralt still seems to have some of his own ideas about how he wants to fight. Regardless, it's not bad overall and with the magic mixed in (and the crossbow), it makes the game work within it's own system. As the game is far more forgiving on the lower difficulty settings. I must admit, I haven't gotten to play Witcher 3 as much as I'd have liked to as I made a deal with my girlfriend that I'd stay behind her in the main quest... And well, she doesn't play all that often.

    • I played it for a long time. I didn't finish it, but I felt like I was gradually improving. Since some say the combat is good, maybe they just got used to it, I don't know.

No. I like the fighting. It's reflex based. Dodge or parry, strike, dodge, use magic if you need to or it's more efficient. Only problem is it's so easy to exploit quen and, especially, axii. Did you play on DM? If not then I hear it can be too easy.

    • It's entirely personal preference, but I kinda like it. For me it's truly life-or-death every single fight, especially on death march.

      • It isn't that great, you are right. Thankfully it's a step up from witcher 2, that game was clunky as all Hell.

      • Combat system is its one major flaw. It would have been one of the greatest games ever, with a Bloodborne or dark souls combat system.
