UK still pay VAT on it, which is a shity tax where government, after taking tax out of my wages, take another 20% of whatever I spend.

Edited by Cerberus64: 8/16/2015 8:16:11 PMHave you ever been ill? Did you have to mortgage your house or go to loan sharks to pay for your medical treatment? Are you stuck with crippling debt for the rest of your life just because you needed surgery? No? Well then be glad you live in the UK where medical treatment is free at the point of need. The NHS costs about £105 Billion a year - it's got to be paid for somehow.

Yes and we are taxes for that as well. At the end of the month my payslip shows that I am deducted income tax, national insurance (the NHS bit), then after that as well as paying VAT on every purchase pretty much, road tax, council tax, additional taxes on alcohol (we Brits like a drink). Don't try and tell me the NHS is free we just have a more socialist model and we all still pay for it just in a different way. And then like most heists these days I have private health to top it up for me and my family.

Actually National Insurance is not for the NHS - it's for state benefits which mostly are the State Pension followed by Widows and Bereavement Benefits, Incapacity Benefit, Unemployment Benefit and Maternity Allowance. I never said the NHS was free - I simply said that the entire burden of the cost or your treatment isn't on your shoulders - it's spread across the entire nation. And so yes, you helped pay for my knee surgery last year (thank you). And please read the small print on your private medical insurance - every one of my friends who've had that have cancelled theirs because when they came to claim on it the insurance company did everything in their power not to pay. It's amazing what they can claim is a 'pre-existing condition'.

I wasn't complaining about the cost months NHS or my additional private health care which has helped a lot recently. I think the NHS is a great idea and the idea of the socialist system is what more should do, the idea of not looking out and having to remortgage etc. is nuts. But we are heavily taxed for it, from all angles and often with 'stealth'.

As an aside this model applies to the rest of Europe as well. It's why we can travel across Europe and receiver ducal care if needed.
