The story if The Last of Us is nothing exceptional. However, the storytelling is exceptional. CoD tends to be lacklustre in both.

I disagree. Not too many games (or movies for that matter) will delve as deep as The Last of Us did into characters and what drives them. Without going too much into spoilers, the story revolves around many fantastic themes: love, loss, friendships, acceptances, tragedies, fear and more. These themes are consistently brought up, in depth, and are almost always important to both the characters in game, and the person playing. You have two main characters with their own backgrounds and characteristics that often clash and/or work together. What each of them goes through, how they deal with it on an individual level along with how they deal with it together, is superbly shown and told throughout the game. This also ties in with your point about how the story is told. We have the Fireflies, and their own struggles and how they present themselves to the world. On the surface, one might mistakenly think the Fireflies are a band of rogue thugs. However, if the character learns what they are trying to accomplish and what they have done, the Fireflies may stand in an entirely different light. This is incredibly apprent in the last act. It's hard to talk about the story of The Last of Us without spoiling some major event. Is the story unique? Apart from how the zombies are formed, not really. Does a good story have to be unique? Not at all.

Edited by SoulEatinFool: 8/13/2015 1:50:37 PMSo many great points here I agree with. When I read people saying they didn't like TLoU or that it was a sub par game with a weak story and narrative I can't help but wonder if they even played it.
-
I guess I should have said more on my opinion. I really like TLoU's story. Characters were well developed and personified, but it was still simple in natured, which strengthen it. It was by no means a revolutionary story, but the story itself along with the way it was told were done exceptionally well.
-
I was never one to think that video games told revolutionary stories. Hell, I rarely think that of any medium.
-
Fair enough, but I think you know what I mean. In short, I highly recommend The Last of Us.
-
Aw had a nice story tho
-
I actually thought this COD story wasn't awful, but storytelling in COD is obviously lackluster as nobody plays it for the story.
-
They seems to be getting better. I might get this one.
-
Plus Kevin spacey was great. But he's always great
-
The delivery of the story in AW is definitely better than the last few releases. Kevin Spacey is good but isn't House of Cards or Usual Suspects good. The set-pieces that practically make Cod campaigns are pretty cool as well.

Tall of the body acting is amazing.
