So the issue with more Vault space is memory restrictions on the previous gen consoles. (PS3 and XBox 360) If anyone remembers the first vault upgrade that bungie did, they said they had to remove a few features for the PS3 and more prominently the XBox 360, which has even less memory than the PS3, in order for the extended vault. In order to even further expand vault space, they would have three options. 1: Remove update support for previous gen consoles, obviously unfair. 2: Further restrict features in the previous gen vaults, maybe only allowing thumbnail images to be seen, more fair but still difficult. 3: Wait for Destiny 2 or another update which won't be comparable with previous gen consoles to be released and put the vault patch in there, most fair option because it doesn't limit anyone's gameplay. Obviously every option has a limitation and it is difficult to keep everyone happy. If I missed an idea feel free to share so maybe we can get Bungies attention. TL;DR: Previous Generation consoles prevent vault updates (among other things) due to memory restraints.

Not being funny but if they in all honestly can't do it for last gen then that's just tuff! Doesn't mean next gen cant have it, it is next gen after all the there reasons totally valid.

  • They never should have supported PS3 and Xbox 360, plain and simple.

  • Honestly this is completely false. Anyone with even a little bit of coding experience knows that variables don't take up that much space. A computer can easily store thousands of them if they are created in the right format, in other words, Bungie's code must have been REALLY sloppy. I have talked with professional programmers who are also fans of the game and they agree.

  • Well, coding genius, you have no idea how Destiny's code is written and the point was that they had to remove the "compare" feature from older generation consoles because it was too memory intensive. First off, that says to me that the vault code is not written well, and secondly that the compare feature should just be permanently removed from the game since it is useless (you can simply visually compare by looking at two different items).

  • Your right I'm not a coding genius, I have no idea how destiny works, even if it was IMPOSSIBLE to make more vault space it was bad planning on their part to add that many guns. It's funny how last gen can easily handle all of the vendor's inventories that they keep adding but can't handle more vault space. Work arounds are possible, it's what the DEVS do. I don't have a problem storing vast amounts of items in other games such as skyrim...

  • Instead of criticizing their coding why don't you suggest a solution such as text vaults or an alternative?

  • I'm just saying that blaming it on the last gen isn't truthful. DEVS jobs are to find work arounds to problems such as this so I'm saying that they are lying to there fan base as to where the problem really is.

Maybe they're lying. A more logical possibility is they're waiting for a big patch like 2.0 TTK to increase vault size due to the super sized armory we will be getting. IMO it's a mix between last gen and less-than-ideal coding (I won't say poor because bungie has coded in some nice things i.e. Glowing eyes on Nighthawk). The best thing to do is to slowly phase out last gen consoles update by update while also improving coding and data usage every time as well.

  • But how did they manage to make storing things so resource intensive?

  • Yeah, that is really the question. They obviously have really bad code powering the vault.

  • By adding the option to look at weapon stats and compare them to weapons you're currently holding as well as allowing you to quickly swap between vault and inventory. Software wise the (insert gaming console you use) has to not only pull up data on everything you've stored in your vault, but also "remember" what's in your current guardians inventory. The simple problem is the RAM on older platforms. There are several programming streamlines that bungie could do to make the process of using the vault less memory consuming but not without costing gamers convenience. Like someone mentioned in another comment, you can move vaults to a non social space, or simply remove any option to actively interact with your inventory while it is active but there will always be trade offs. You simply can't program something to use as little memory as possible while still being as effective as the Vaults.

I've seen plenty of other games that allow you to store more things while still allowing you to view stats and access your own inventory. It just seems like an oversight on their part that this is something that is so difficult to do. Also, moving the vault off of social areas doesn't seem like much of a trade off to me. I hate having to load into the tower multiple times to move weapons between characters. It takes forever. Why not just allow us to have some type of storage in our ships that we can access from orbit?

  • It's called the Destiny Companion app or Bungie.net. Quick and easy vault access, including stat comparison and 3D models. The issue with Destiny is it's a live game across multiple platforms. I'm not sure if anyone here is a PC gamer but I'm very fond of it. Your Playstation or Xbox is just a computer streamlined to play games. More RAM, bigger processor, Faster internet. (in general, I know some people spend a fortune getting the best in PC technology) The issue with computers is hardware and software. There's only so much RAM and Processing power in the older generation consoles and running a live game, on the Internet, that's very graphic intensive and has many thousands of items is a strain. Just running destiny on the XBox 360 uses up almost all of your memory and you'll get sluggish reactions from your console after a while. This is normal, but also why it limits newer, faster consoles. You have to remember that your guardian and what it's doing isn't the only thing your console is processing at any given time. It has to constantly look to the server to get updates on what your fireteam leader is shooting at and whether or not crota takes a knee. Ideally, there'd be huge vaults for everyone, which I'm willing to bet huge money on a vault update in TTK due to its massive new armory. That's another story. Fact is, to make Destiny the best experience forALL players, bungie has to decided where to limit players and I agree that it makes sense to hold off in a vault update until they can streamline it to be better for everyone, or until Destiny no longer supports the limiting consoles.

  • The thing is that they're the ones who designed it this way. They've made it always online, despite the fact that it hinders the players without benefiting them in the slightest. It can't possibly be that hard to just NOT dedicate so many resources to stuff that's not relevant at the time in order to allow more things to be stored in the vault. I'd imagine that just having separate vaults for armor, weapons, and other junk would allow us to store more stuff, and seems like an easy fix.

  • I agree and that's actually a great idea. Maybe even just separate pages for each type of stored item that way you have less thumbnails up at one time.

  • You forgot option 4, Bungie moves the vault out of the social space ( check my profile for 2 thread links in motto message ) The main problem is their odd monopoly of system resources... which there are a few ways around... they just do not seem to keen on putting attention to that problem in a creative way...

  • Destiny is supposed to be a ten-year game. So I'm hoping they phase out last-gen before that so I can get my added vault space and soon

Won't solve main issue ( the lack of creative programming on Bungies part when it comes to solving problems of limitations,... as well as Bungies ( and possibly many more developers ) misuse of system resources... )

  •
Destiny is supposed to be a ten-year game. Hopefully by the summer of 2016 though because that gives people 3 years to upgrade to current gen.

  • I'd say just give current gen the patch but not last-gen. But I'm very much not a tecchie so I'm sure there's some reason why that wouldn't work

  • It would work, same way giving exclusive content to specific platforms, but you don't want to upset your playerbase.

  • People are going to bitch and moan no matter what. This app was filled with people screaming and yelling about how they need to nerf gally and Thorn and how Bungie doesn't listen. Well, they listened. And now people are bitching and moaning about nerfing Gally and Thorn. Gamers today are by and large, whiny babies. No matter what Bungie does, a lot of people are going to piss and moan about it. So they might as well just do it anyway.
