If you really want to know how to get past lvl 20, it's simple. Go on Crucible/Vanguard playlists, and PLAY. Crucible/Vanguard has the chance of giving rare armor with +26 light. With that, you should be around lvl 25-29. Getting enough Vanguard/Crucible marks can give armor with +36 light. That will get you to LVL 32. STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT BEING CARRIED THROUGH LFG AND LEVEL UP LIKE THE REST OF US

My question has nothing to do with leveling up whatsoever. WTF are you talking about?
-
By getting to lvl 32, you can do lvl 30 Daily Heroics much easier, get Ascendant materials, and upgrade your gun. It also makes VoG super easy. Even on hard mode. That right there is more than enough to upgrade your one gun.
-
I know all that; thank you, but that does nothing to address my original question either...
My level 20 got a legendary heavy machine gun that requires ascendant energy to upgrade, but there is no way for a level 20 to get the ascendant energy materials needed to upgrade the weapon in light of all the recent changes! Should legendary weapons that require ascendant energy to upgrade still be dropping in Destiny? If so, how is a level 20 supposed to get them?
Rank up, do VoG/Daily Mission, level up gun. Basically what I said in these two replies. How do you not understand?

This ? symbol is used to designate a question in the English language. The question that I specifically addressed of BUNGIE in their help forum is:
Should legendary weapons that require ascendant energy to upgrade still be dropping in Destiny?
What don't you understand?
-
That answer is yes. VoG gives many weapons that need Ascendant Materials. You can also get said materials from VoG. Don't know what you are confused about.

Edited by SteelCityBattler: 7/23/2015 11:58:06 PMI tried to change the question to "non-raid" weapons but it will not let me. You are saying what is already known. In case you have not read the entire chain, this legendary came from a blue engram at Rahool, which is a rare occurrence and might be an unintended exception/oversight from every other way to currently obtain legendary weapons in Destiny today, none of which require ascendant energy anymore! So when every weapon that drops in crucible or that can be purchased from ANY source in Destiny does NOT require ascendant energy to upgrade, you think it deliberate that a new player might be given as their first legendary weapon one that requires materials only available through end game content when all they have are blue weapons? That is the most illogical thing I have ever heard, but perhaps that fits some of what Bungie does... This character is now at level 28 and has a Matador from crucible and Vestian Dynasty from the Queen's story line, neither of which require ascendant energy to upgrade. As frequently as they drop, I am sure I will get a couple BTRD heavy machine guns that are better and do not require ascendant energy to upgrade before I LFG the VOG just to get ascendant energy to upgrade this anomaly. When I first play the VOG with this character, it is only a week old right now, it will be properly equipped and not need carried by anyone!

Play the game and quit complaining honestly. Do strikes to get better gear, and as soon as you level up you will find it easier to get these materials. We ALL had to grind for materials and we ALL had to put the time in to get the results we wanted. That's how the game was meant to be played. Its not supposed to give you easy handouts, if you want shards work for them. I guarantee that the weapon you are talking about will become irrelevant as soon as you are high enough level to get the materials to upgrade it. THAT'S WHY ITS LEGENDARY
