That isn't broken whatsoever. How do you think everyone else upgraded their first legendaries? I grinded public events until I had enough, by then I had a high enough light level to do higher level activities (buy gear from vendors). Believe it or not ascendant materials are meant to be rare(ish) so don't expect to get them for free. Tldr: man up and get grinding

  • Thing is - "back in the day" we could get ascendant materials many different ways thus maxing the weapons was a bit easier. Today, however, for a solo player the level 30 Daily Heroic is the only way to get ascendant materials. So, a level 20 will not be able to do that. There may be some level 28+ guardians that can take someone through the level 30 Daily, but once the level 20 gets to the darkness zone they will not be able to deal damage to the enemies. So, for a lower-level solo player, the only way to max older weapons if they have them is to grind to level 28 (easiest way is to start buying legendary gear by grinding for vanguard marks or crucible marks) and then start the level 30 Daily missions. By then one would hope to have also received some better legendary drops and/or exotic drops.

  • I did exactly the same thing that you say you did! However, I did not consider it much of a grind doing the public events to get those materials since I had been doing public events and accumulating ascendant materials from long before I ever got my first legendary weapon and by the time I got one I already had the materials I needed to upgrade it. What you don't seem to understand is that those materials are no longer available from Public Events; they have been replaced by motes of light now. Did you have to do a raid to upgrade your first legendary weapon; I think not...

  • Then I suppose you did not do any public events before you were level 26; good for you for being lazy and having online friends to carry you through the VOG!

  • ...and by the way, if you don't understand that there is a significant difference between doing hard VOG down one level and doing VOG easy down three levels, then perhaps you should just keep your mouth shut because you are just proving yourself ignorant in these matters...

  • What don't you get; you are still saying a new player needs to reach a high enough level to LFG and play the VOG to upgrade their first Legendary weapon because the materials that used to be available through public events can no longer be obtained that way... Just because you did not get your upgrade materials from public events does not mean that you couldn't; well, new players can't!
