Yeah, it took me a long time to get where I am, and with no college it didn't help. I had to take a lot of crappy jobs simply for the experience. Lots of help desk. But after I got some server experience, and was laid off in 2008, I used the free time to get my MCSE. But then the economy was crap and finally got a more advanced roll, but was still paid crap! I definitely went through my share of jobs that were, yeah we need you set up exchange servers, setup a brand new AD domain, make all these apple computers work with this windows network etc, all for $20/hour!
Admins and programmers make about the same I believe. Depends on the company of course. But a senior IT person at a good company can easily make around 150k. Of course that would be working for a good company for many years. You should check out average pay ranges for your area.
