Four years studying electrical engineering, really. Got a job out of college with a government contractor. It helps that the school I went to has pretty close ties to the myriad of contractors and government entities in the city I live in/around.
My grades were ok. A good resume, some relevant experience as a student tech, and involvement in technical clubs at school helped. Most of the specific work skills were taught on the job; I just needed programming, math, and physics skills.
