You gotta be a senior in this game for a long time otherwise, I call a lil BS. Not jealous.. I'd like to be where you are now in X amout of years. Just didn't think system admins (What I went to school for) could make that much... Certs? maybe a better post secondary paper than me? i'm curious - DM me if that helps you.

Edited by Z31 Turbo: 7/16/2015 2:21:41 PMOh yeah, sys admins can make a lot more than that. Though it helps I live in the bay area where everything is more expensive. I have no college and am MCSE certified. Also, only 31 if you are calling me a senior :P

Edited by Skorpion: 7/16/2015 2:29:19 PMNo college.....And here i'm paying back 15k :( - It was always my perception that once you hit like 115k that's 'programmer' money. I figured sys admins cap'd at like say 110k wth a rlly good company and position. Glad to know I can aim for higher than say 90k. I know what I want in life I don't need to make a shit load of money but I do have exceptions in myself I should be at 75k somewhere in 5-10rs. Right now i'm Lvl 2 support for ..... Sorgan Mtanl3y......... [decrypt lol] thanks for reply.

Yeah, it took me a long time to get where I am, and with no college it didn't help. I had to take a lot of crappy jobs simply for the experience. Lots of help desk. But after I got some server experience, and was laid off in 2008, I used the free time to get my MCSE. But then the economy was crap and finally got a more advanced roll, but was still paid crap! I definitely went through my share of jobs that were, yeah we need you set up exchange servers, setup a brand new AD domain, make all these apple computers work with this windows network etc, all for $20/hour! Admins and programmers make about the same I believe. Depends on the company of course. But a senior IT person at a good company can easily make around 150k. Of course that would be working for a good company for many years. You should check out average pay ranges for your area.

Hey, nice to see fellow SysAds. Making 103K at the moment, gotta finish my degree to start bumping it up.
-
Degrees are only good for increasing your debt. Go for certs!
-
Ya, currently have Sec+, took that beta for Storage+, & am studying for CISSP. I'm only interested in the degree because I feel like I'm capped out as to progression at work.

If you're just looking for new skills cause you're stuck in a rut might just be time to find a new job. Just say you can do all the stuff you want to learn and figure it out as you go. IT is so easy these days. But getting Cisco certs is definitely a great idea. You can make some good money as a network admin.

Can you recommend a salary comparison site? - I did this research while I was in school (2014) and concluded that sys admins were runner up, programmers being the highest cape about 130k. system admins 86-102k. It didn't state approx how long with company, and as you said too, other deciding factors (living area, XP, etc.) Again, I.T. knowledge always appreciated!

I think the problem is that sites have a very broad definition of what a sys admin is. I just looked at system admins on salary.com and they seem to consider that a simple helpdesk job. If you look at similar jobs, you see stuff like system application analysis level V and shit like that which is just fancy titles for higher level admins. All easily achievable with enough experience and desire. You gotta be really willing to take on new roles and challenges if you don't want to get stuck in helpdesk. In job interviews I usually exaggerate any skills I have because I know how easy it is to learn new stuff as you go. If you see a job that you think is just over your qualifications, go for it, say you can do it and just figure it out. Almost all problems can be resolved by Google anyways!

I always tell people when it comes to IT. the ?Job outline NEVER outlines th actual duties and task done on a daily. Espically for a sys admin. Wouldn't be much of an IT guy if I couldn't solve problems know what I mean haha... Thanks man, good lookin out! I'll remember this convo

Paying for all them Z's
-
Shhhh don't tell anyone but my daily driver is a corvette! Will likely get the next gen z35 though
-
Only if they offer a turbo varient.
-
Yeah, I'm hoping they make the next Z a bad ass sports car and not an frs/brz competitor. 400hp turbo v6 will do juuust fine.
-
Compete with the gtr. Wait.....
-
Yeah it would, but the gtr is overdue for a 6-700hp remake itself!
