This Red Bull thing is super easy and cheap for consumers to get another piece of Destiny, but I absolutely loathe this direction. If I buy a product (red bull), I want it to be because the product is good, not because of the toy inside (destiny content). You're effectively making people buy something they don't want (or even hate) to get something they do want. This completely screws up the system and effectively makes money lie. I want my monetary vote (because buying stuff is equivalent to supporting or believing in a product) to represent my opinions/ideals and not be used at a convention where Red Bull says "invest in us. Our product is good. We're reporting record sales!" It's annoying and promotes non-genuine consumption. When you get older you'll realize that who you give your money to in a consumer driven society means quite a bit.

Money is about externalizing value in society. Once you spend it, once it leaves your hands, you don't actually get a say where it swims in the "ocean of value". It's nice when a company makes transparent what how it spends a consumer's money and even better when it reflects some social ideal, but the money itself doesn't actually retain any moral content—that's on each spending action (whether by an individual or abstract entity such as a corporation). tl;dr Money buys hammers; hammers can build or destroy. Kind of a hilarious assertion about my aging and evolution of opinion btw :D

Dude, I think you missed the point. You are correct when talking about hammers, but more is going on. Right now you are deciding the layout and structure of Bungie and THEIR PARTNERS' business model. If I can borrow your hammer example: Money is buying hammers, not because the hammers are good (they break when you try to build or destroy anything), but because they come with a coupon to the new exclusive waterslide at the swimming pool you go to everyday. So now you've got the waterslide, but also a shitload of broken hammers and a sore wrist (with some abrasions) from using bad hammers. Now, think about the people selling hammers. They are totally going to tell their friends that they sold a bunch of hammers using this business model. Fast forward a bit and now you've got a few new attractions at the swimming pool, but you have to buy a crappy hammer, some rotted wood, and rusty nails to use them. Epilogue(joke): You build a ladder with the materials. The ladder breaks while you're on it. And you're dead.

I see where you're going with it, but for reputation to have that sort of persistent future impact (i.e. today's consumer purchasing decisions shaping tomorrow's business model). Bungie's community is filled with petulant Debbie Downers. Whenever they legitimately do something wrong, they just spin it with a "we're sorry" and it's done. The money that is being passed around at those levels is not subject to a few people being salty because Red Bull is totally unhealthy crap. Probably anyone except Philip Morris could throw advertising $ at Bungie, and as long as it didn't have a direct impact on their image they would accommodate some sort of exclusive digital bling. (That's no negative reflection on Bungie, just the way it is.) Someone might whine about it, but 1. the whining would be drowned out in about 7 picoseconds and 2. it would do nothing about the same deal happening again the next day. Maybe I'm too cynical. Anywho.
