You need to get to Rank two in either Vanguard, Crucible, or any one of the Factions (Future War Cult, Dead Orbit, New Monarchy).
Once you get there you can start buying the Legendary (purple) armor sets. The Vanguard set is bought with Vanguard marks and all the rest are bought with Crucible Marks. All of the pieces in these sets have "+36 Light" and a full set (four pieces) will get you to Level 32.
After you get to 32 you can start doing the fun stuff like the Raids, Weekly Heroics, and Prison Of Elders.

Thanks. I'll do that.

are you close to Rank 2 in any of those? If you're Rank 0 in everything, the easiest way is to join a faction. If you're in a Faction ALL reputation (Vanguard Rep and Crucible Rep) will get funneled into one place.

Edited by Evan: 6/22/2015 3:42:21 PMThe Vanguard, Crucible, Future War Cult, Dead Orbit, and New Monarchy armor sets are basically identically (functionally and visually). The only difference between them is the attributes that they boost. (Intelligence, Discipline, and Strength) Future War Cult armor boosts: ---Intelligence and Discipline Dead Orbit armor boosts:------------Discipline and Strength New Monarchy armor boosts:-----Intelligence and Strength The Vanguard and Crucible vendors offer two different sets. I don't know off the top of my head what they boost. Regardless, these boosts don't matter that much because you will move up to better gear eventually.

Ok, thanks.

I think I'm close to Rank 2 in Vanguard. Are faction gear and weapons better in any way? And if so, is there a better faction? Either way I'm still in finals/exams season, so I'm not going to spend much time in Destiny for a couple of weeks.
