Evolution should be taught, yes. It's essentially proven, but if you think it necessarily "disproves" a God or some kind of higher authority, you're wrong. If you think The Bible even means the world was made in six days, you're wrong. I remember hearing about how the Hebrew word for "day" is essentially meaning "day" as in an era and not 24 hours.

Well it's sort of obvious that the earth was made in 6 literal days according to the bible because it talks about the day and the night.

Edited by Gr33n: 1/16/2013 4:15:11 AMNot necessarily. Most professors of Christianity will tell you that the entirety of Genesis is completely metaphorical, and not to convey a list of events, but to convey a story to illustrate how the Earth was created. Once you go metaphorical, there's now telling how deep it goes. Day and night could easily have been just a part of an incredibly elaborate metaphor. The belief that the Earth was created in six days is no longer as concrete a part of Christianity (especially those who are well educated about the Bible, similar historic works, and the entirety of the religion as a whole) as it used to be. But I, as well the Catholic Professor that I had for Intro to Christianity, and other religious professors at my school, find it stupid to try and say that evolution can't be true because of the Bible, especially because there's nothing specific in the Bible to go against it.

Except for the fact that in the bible it states that God created the birds of the heavens, the fish of the sea, creeping beasts and cattle. Or is that a metaphor for different types of bacteria? From what I know about the bible and evolution, I don't see them being able to coexist. But what do I know? I'm just in high school.

Well, it does say he created them, but doesn't say how. They could very well be crafted by evolution set in motion by God. Loopholes, I guess. I'm a christian, but I don't hold much of the Bible in high regard, I stick to it for the morality more than anything. For me it's more like the Futurama version of God that was floating around here today. Evolution is clearly the way to go, and people like my neighbor (who doesn't believe in dinosaurs) are just to stubborn to take a look at facts and what things mean. Even the Catholic Church has an official stance that logic and facts trump faith, and they have acknowledged evolution and the possibility of alien life. People are too stubborn.

That's interesting.. I'm of Christian faith but I've often pondered if Earth was created in 6 literal days.

The assumption that Genesis was a non-literal explanation for the formation and development of the Earth is silly because even if it was attempting to convey the story non-literally, the order of the events are completely jumbled. That can't be justified by non-literal wording, it's simply a false order of events.
