  • My greatest problem with White rappers is that I believe they are primarily responsible for the overemphasis on multisyllabic rhymes in rap today. Prior to Big Pun and Eminem, both of which at least utilized them effectively most of the time, multisyllabic rhymes were merely regarded as an *element* to rap that can be good or bad, whereas today people think that all you need to be a good rapper is the ability to rhyme together big words. Case in point: Yelawolf. The man is atrocious. He has no flow whatsoever, no deep content or subject matter, and he utilizes multis to the extent of sounding tacky. Now compare that to say Nas or Kool G Rap who still utilize multis but only to the extent that they compliment their flow, subject matter, and cadence. They say White people can't dance; maybe it's also true that White people don't understand flow so they compensate with multis. The exceptions of course are Big Pun and Eminem, more so the former. Pun did everything that Eminem did before Eminem did it, and to a greater extent (the amazing multisyllabic rhymes, tongue twisters, alliteration, overshadowing people on their own track, etc), and yet Eminem--while still a great rapper himself--tends to get all the credit for those things despite Pun doing it before him. And whereas Pun was able to combine his excessive multis with subject matter and storytelling--see "Capital Punishment Medley" or "Fast Money" for example--Eminem often has to resort to non-sequiturs or cheap genital jokes to compensate.
