Cardio is great for dropping weight weight training is great too. Find a buddy who goes to the gym and make sure they are supportive of what you are trying to do. Or spend a little extra and get a trainer at the gym.

The more muscle mass you have the greater need your BMR ( Basal Metabolic rate ) has for calories. This results in a greater off in calories. For males the standard is 11x(body weight) That is the very rough estimate. There are more complex algorithms. But it is within 200 calories +/-

You need to eat a lot of calories to gain that muscle though. People don't generally bulk and cut at the same time because it doesn't work.
