As far as I've seen from other players, no you do not get rewards again, even on a different character. Just complete it on a different one next reset, that's all I can say.

Obviously you use a key to open the chest to obtain ship and shader etc but if it only gives it to you on one character then you must get something else right?

Correct. Bungie is arms are of the issue and working in a fix. Just be vigilant guardian.
