You must remember, this was for kids who grew up before "trigger warnings", when bullying and broken bones were just a part of growing up and children were largely autonomous (no cell phones to check up on them).
You think this is dark, try watching the episode of [i]Sesame Street[/i] where Big Bird has to learn to come to terms with the death of Mr. Hooper.

Go back and list all the Disney cartoons (not including Pixar) where both parents are alive in the end. It's a short list. - Sleeping Beauty - 101 Dalmations - Peter Pan - Alice in Wonderland (maybe) - Mulan - Tangled ... that may be about it.
