I can't be too excited for House of Wolves, and here's why

Destiny showcases an amazing universe with untold potential, and that excites me. What keeps me off-put is the increasing unwillingness or inability to showcase a tangible story. What is my destiny? What is the point of any of this? And House of Wolves has an incredible opportunity to address that, and will probably fail. First off, good things. Trials of Osiris and Prison of Elders provide new endgame content that look fun and will certainly provide good rewards. More importantly, bad things. Trials of Osiris and Prison of Elders seem disconnected entirely from the universe that Destiny has already set. Osiris is an extension of the Crucible, which, really, should be tied into the story as the warring factions of the city--New Monarchy, Dead Orbit, Future War Cult. Anything less, like a training grounds sort of idea, makes the crucible useless in terms of story. And why should it be disconnected from the story? Further along that route, Brother Vance could provide another warring faction to the mix, hoping that the reef's political agenda is made heard in the tower. Ooh, now that's an idea. On to Prison of Elders. What we've seen so far is a space that has four different areas where the enemy factions seem completely at home. I never imagined the Prison like that. Moreso, in grimoire it states that the queen walks along the Prison and its cells and how they all resemble the Archon Priest's. Small details, not really important. The million dollar idea then with prison of elders is, instead of the queen saying, hey, here's all the valuable stuff we have, enemy leaders, loot that cost my guard their lives, you know stuff like that-- That the escaped prisoner, Skolas, put a hit on the queen. He knows what leaders are down there, he knows what the reef hides, and he knows there's a current power vacuum. He has the house of wolves, and he escaped with his life. No, the right way to do wave-based endgame isn't to mow through enemies and fight the boss they're protecting. The endgame is to defend the reef from waves of enemies who are trying to save their bosses, and, at the end, to have them all face their inevitable doom. This all points to fighting an enemy with intelligence. Which leads me to the strike mission-- The Shadow Thief. There's nothing really new or exciting about the strike, you know. Chase an enemy that throws minions at you until you corner them and gally the bajeezus out of them until they die. Omnigul version 2. Except... there's an incredible opportunity in the strike that shouts out to be done and the chance to make something of it literally doesn't happen. You follow this dude into a ketch as he goads you on, and you lose communication with the outside world. You're so hellbent on 'killing' this guy (when we know full well that Archon Priests and presumably any fallen can be revived from a servitor in the same manner that ghosts do with guardians) that you chase him into a corner he wants us to go into. While we're stuck on his ketch fighting and chasing him, the million dollar idea is for it to be a distraction. A play. What if, during this time that we lose communication, the traveler or the city or the tower come under attack? It's just It's like all the ideas are already there and Bungie, it's like you refuse to take that step. Show us something new, something bold, something wrong and something definitely right. I couldn't care less about this gun or that armor. Flesh out your universe.

  • If you want a story, go read a book because Destiny is for having fun. If you haven't realized by now, Destiny doesn't have a cohesive, easy to comprehend story. It just doesn't and there is nothing you can do about it. This post is entirely meaningless and trying to impose something that isn't going to happen anytime soon. Yes, the Trials of Osiris seems completely dispatched from any significance from the universe, but you are missing the point, its an activity. A new one at that. And this game is in desperate need of content. Yet you are worried about it fitting into the universe. Destiny breaks almost every rule of general gaming, yet it is successful and largely fun. I'd much rather have Destiny include these activities without the constraints of trying to include it into the story. Bungie has focused more on activities and core gameplay than a story, which is good. The reason for this is that: A game can survive without a story with good core gameplay and fun activities, a game can't survive that long with a good story but lacking good core gameplay and fun activities.

      • I have learned to expect nothing from bungie! All these broken and empty promises everyone should know by now that bungie is just not going to broaden this game any further and just save it for destiny 2. I still play because the gun play is good and having a clan helps to retain the fun! I took a long break and swore never to play again only to return to platinum it once and for all just having to do salvage and level up a hunter which at first i refused to do because i wasnt a fan but now honestly i am playing again because hunters are more fun then i thought and kind of sparked me playing again but i am sure it will get old fast after awhile (and witcher 3 comes out next week lol) but HOW does look interesting but due to bungie's current track record of talking up an amazing game and then blowing it will most likely hold true to this dlc..... It sucks but well we will just see i guess i am just not getting my hopes up. P.S. Anyone notice that this game kind of a free to play model? I have said it in forum before but it does seem like it only u have to pay for the game and pay more to advance. Any other game dlc is there if u want it but not required to advance for the most part but not destiny. Just a thought..

            • Because of the multitude of season pass holders, Bungie had no incentive to develop something groundbreaking or revolutionary. Personally, I don't think they even have the ABILITY to do anything that will breathe new life into this franchise. They had all the time in the world, could have spent whatever money they needed, to make this game ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE... They squandered it at every turn. Piss poor storyline, not anywhere near next gen quality let alone standard fair price point, in addition to ridiculous, ill represented rationale on weapon balance issues, bugs and glitches fr DAY 1 which took 6+ MONTHS to fix... Shall I go on? I'm just on here posting for the lols. I love how some people on here try to defend this game and Bungie as if someone was trying to steal their binky. Haha

              • On another, similar note, I'm less than enthusiastic about a vendor giving me missions and portraying that as story. Give me one mission, dude. Kill Skolas. Everything in between should be a natural adventure across the galaxy to find this dude, hunt his sidekicks across the solar system, etc. I think everyone was disappointed with Eris morn and I don't know why that's continuing.

The subtext for PoE is 'The Arena', making this more of a gladiatorial game than being a literal representation of the prison itself. The npc announcements and all associated dialogue implies you are being faced with synthetic challenges. I would assume the mobs are pulled from cells, armed and then thrown at you for entertainment (else why are they armed at all?). The final boss, skolas, was a prized catch as briefly eluded to in one of the queens grimoire cards. So you end the level 35 arena by facing a fallen champion... The context for which is currently unknown.
