To be honest, all of them Except for Contact Harvest are necessary to understand the tie-in between games and cutscenes. The Forerunner Saga is great to read (its the first story in the Halo story before the Master Chief story). The Forerunner Saga is good to understand the underlying plot of the whole Halo Franchise and alot of Halo 4 as well.

Why are you excluding Contact Harvest? It's the only piece of fiction that actually explains how the Human-Covenant War began.

  • Because while it does do that, Harvest practically isn't mentioned anywhere else in the universe and has no other significance other than being an Outer Colony remembered for being the 1st planet to fall by the Covenant. Johnson, Jenkins, and Tartarus are the only significant characters that carry on the plot throughout the series.

  •
Because while it does do that, Harvest practically isn't mentioned anywhere else in the universe
Really? Halo Wars Halo Wars: Genesis The Fall of Reach Dirt The Life and Death of Preston J. Cole
has no other significance other than being an Outer Colony remembered for being the 1st planet to fall by the Covenant.
You know the fall of Harvest caused entire colonies to starve, and lead to food riots, right?
Johnson, Jenkins, and Tartarus are the only significant characters that carry on the plot throughout the series.
You can downplay almost every piece of lore if you want to, but congratulations on doing so for someone new to the EU of Halo, and for a piece of fiction crucial for understanding the underlying motivation for everything the Covenant does
