Being familiar with both Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now, there were few surprises in the story. I do like it that they made your character lose his mind and put you in his version of reality. It was a bit startling to see what was actually going on later. I hadn't seen anything quite like that before in a game, at least not as well done. It also had several endings, which was rare in FPS games at the time. Overall, it wasn't anything special or unique in literature or movies, but it was something new for video games and introduced a new generation to a classic tale of madness and the horrors of war. I don't think it's worthy of any cult fandom, but it's definitely worth playing if you find it in a bargain bin somewhere. Especially if you're unfamiliar with the overarching plot.

 • I'll pass. I'm already depressed enough as it is. I can do without my entertainment telling me I'm a bad person for being entertained.

 • It's about exploring the darker side of the human psyche, the game/story itself doesn't negatively harp on the player for playing the game.

 • Other people in this thread have shown me screenshots of loading screens where the game literally says "if you were a good person, you wouldn't be playing this" to the player.

 • "If you were a better person, you wouldn't be here." I don't remember that particular loading screen. You are presented with a series of choices throughout the game, most are morally gray, but none are outright evil until the very end. But the game gives you a choice. If the devs really said that players were bad people for playing the game, that seems silly. I didn't feel like a bad person at the end, but I realized that it was a tragic retelling of the Heart of Darkness style story. So had had some separation for me there, otherwise, I was along for the ride to see where it took me. I felt more effected by movies like Memento and Requiem for a Dream. But I can only tell you how I felt and what I remembered, how you feel about the game is entirely up to you :)

 • Believe me, my brain would find some way to let this game get to me. It probably already has.
