The Railgun
A well known weapon type. Something of science fiction in our time, but totally feasible in Destiny's universe. It's been mentioned before, but not really explained from what I've seen. This is just my individual vision for it - not only the weapon, but also it's purpose and it's implementation.
First of all, think Icebreaker on steroids in the heavy slot, and with the ammo limitations of a rocket launcher. This would be a shoulder fired, slow reload speed, ultra-high impact weapon requiring surgical precision to illustrate it's greatest potential effect. No auto-tracking rockets or spray and pray bullet showers here, this is the weapon of a cold, calculated warrior.
The ammunition would be called core rounds, and each damage type would have it's own round variant. These rounds will hit like heavy slugs fired at approx. 8,000 fps (roughly 7x the velocity of a .357 magnum) with overwhelming surgical firepower, each with its own 'after-effect' both visually and physically. Elevating the choice between which type to use well beyond a simple matter of 'damage modification', and placing it in the arena of over all combat outcome alteration; in other words - a possible game changer.
They organize as follows:
'Antimatter' rounds for Void - sometime after initial impact damage it delivers a mini black hole inside the target directly at the point of impact and places a medium term debuff; debilitating the target's damage output and movement speed while inflicting a normal intensity DoT.
(this is your versatile option- weaken it, control it, hurt it)
'Tesla' rounds for Arc - immediately after initial impact damage it shocks the target with relentless violence and places a long term debuff; disorienting the target's ability to identify adversaries and weakening it's shield armor while inflicting a low intensity DoT.
(this is your endurance fight option - weaken it, control it, wear it down)
'Magma' rounds for Solar - shortly after initial impact damage it ignites the target in a coating of lava flames and places a very severe intensity, short term DoT.
(this is your pure spike damage option - target it, kill it ASAP)
No kinetic versions
- Ammunition assignment is automatic, the weapon knows what it fires, just give it heavy ammo. You won't be searching through your inventory to pair the correct ammo type with your specific weapon.
It's as simple (or not so simple) as that. Thoughts?
What do you think? Would you like your very own Railgun? What would be some names we'd see given to them? Exotic versions? Any specific perks outside the ones we already have for heavy weapons? Add to this, build on this. Show Bungie how bad you want your Railgun.
1st Edit: Apparently I need to clear up or educate further on exactly what a Railgun is, why it's not just another fusion rifle and why it should be in the heavy slot. Not a problem at all. I'll let this video speak for me on that matter:

^ This, but miniaturized enough to be shoulder fired. Should paint a fairly clear picture.
2nd Edit: Bungie is not all that unfamiliar with the concept of a Railgun. In the Halo universe they created, UNSC warships used guns called MACs (Magnetic Accelerator Cannons) which were basically oversized Railguns. Volleys of these were used to great effect against Covenant armadas and ship clusters. Bungie writers deployed an entire lore concept around these weapons. Just thought I'd share.

1 ReplyWould be an awesome idea- a precise, high damage weapon meant to be used against a super heavily armored target or bunch of targets. I don't know about the ammo types, but it would definitely be a great excuse to have a heavy that punches through multiple targets at once. A rocket launcher, only with all its damage focused on a point instead of in an explosion.
