I ran into a team using only felwinter's lie and thorn that destroyed me. If I tried to get in close, I would get a shotgun to the face. If I tried to stay distanced, thorn would two shot me. And if I tried using corners, I would still get shotgunned. Any suggestions as to how I should counter this load out in the future? I'm not looking to equip a thorn myself (I don't use hand cannons) or a felwinter's lie (I don't have one). So I'm looking for feedback that doesn't involve fighting fire with fire.
Edit: Thanks for all of the feedback! I'll compile my list of strategies here:
-snipers
-fusions with fast charge rate (PI or plan c)
-shoulder charge
-turn off console (XD)
-fusion grenades
-red death (that's what I used when getting wrecked :P) or scout rifles with third eye
Ones that imo provide a more guaranteed kill w/out dying:
-sniping
-fusion rifles
-possibly red death (if I ever get good enough to two shot constantly) or mida

Thorn vs thorn or TLW

A good counter were AR rifles, then they broke them. pulse to slow scout to slow hand canon to slow AR to weak. no primary is good enough to take felwinters as for thorn, if you get hit once back down, regen health, but usually my counter to thorn is hawkmoon or thorn its self, suros was quick enough in the past, but its 2 weak now

2 RepliesAre u on XB1? Cause I played a team with the same strategy on control and we lost with the score being like 20,000 to 5,000

Either fight fire with fire or quit, if you're against a good pre-made team with that load out then sniping becomes hard work because they'll call you out and all shoot you at once with thorn...

I'm sorry but sniping will just make the good players switch. If you can headshot with Thorn you should be able to headshot with a sniper rifle. Practice with Red Death. It is a natural counter to Thorn.

Mida Predyths revenge Keep your distance.

If using shotgun against fellwinters lie stay farther away you will get two shots in if the first doesn't kill you and aim for the head other wise a high powers close to mid range weapon will do the trick Thorn don't rush it instead duck in and out of corners and ether get really close without being shot or go long range with a scout rifle and strafe long not short becomes you are harder to hit that way

Hawkmoon

Edited by Swiftlock: 4/1/2015 3:35:37 AMLast Word is pretty much the only other primary ridiculous enough to directly stand up to a skilled Thorn user. Red Death/Evergreen/Three Little Words are solid Pulse Rifles if you can land 2 bursts to the face, but that's easier said than done. Hawkmoon/Timur's Lash/high-impact HC's are also viable if your aim is straight, but the perks aren't stacked in their favor as heavily as the Thorn's. The Multi-Tool is a surprisingly effective gun for popping heads at mid/far distances as well. It behaves a bit like a semi-auto Suros before it got nerfed, and can down targets pretty fast. Badger and Gheleon's Demise are alternatives since their extremely high impact can also turn enemies into paste with around 3 headshots. They also keep your precious exotic slot free so you can use other stuff like Plan C or Truth. Any other options require careful positioning, smart tactics, and using your teammates as meat shields.

The Last Word and sniper.

2 RepliesFrom a thorn/shotgun User: Thorn is deadly in long/very Long Range. Shotgun: very close range. To counter you would obviously need a mid-range primary like the Vex or an Auto rifle. And get in that mid range distance.

If u can't beat them then join umm. I was never a fan of hand cannons until I got the fatebringer, now I have all the hand cannons and always go back to the thorn for pvp. Once u get a good hand cannon u will fall in love with it. Like a lot of other people have said fusion rifles seem to be the best u may die also but u can get your return kill on them at the same time. Yes frustrating but keep your head up

2 RepliesRed Death/ HAWKMOON and any high impact and range fusion rifles such as plug one

1 Replystep 1- thorn step 2- felwinters

The best counter would be thorn and found verdict.

Distance of the shotguns coupled with a Scout or Pulse Rifle. Thorn, distance and a good strife action with a scout or pulse rifle. CQC with shotgun/fusion and melee.
-
Good good with a sniper. I also like running universal remote and my sniper just in case.

Pressing back and holding Y:)

2 RepliesBest advice is if you're alone to just back out and join different game. Yeah its the coward thing to do but if people have to use those weapons as the only means of getting kills than it isn't worth the headache. If you are in a fire team then I would stay at range with a scout like MIDA or any with third eye preferably to see if one of the shotgun phags are trying to flank and sniper combo. Definitely keep your distance and stay by cover to avoid getting two shot thorn killed hopefully. I'm not the best player in crucible but that's my 2 cents

2 RepliesTurning off your console usually helps...
-
Snipe. With a little patience and time you'll have your (praedyth's) revenge. All puns aside learning to snipe makes crucible so much easier imo
-
Use red death to counter thorn and stop those pesky postmortems and pray deaths revenge if you have it for felwinters lie
-
2 RepliesMaybe the last word? You will have to find that perfect range though, where you can beat thorn and are outside the range of felwinters. Going shotgun to shotgun isn't going to work because nothing compares to felwinters, you will be dead before you get into range with your shotgun. A sniper might work, but thorn has some good range gotta be quick.
