I'd like to say there's better stuff out there, but that's sadly with the inclusion that nothing recent is in that category. Lain, Mushishi, and Moribito are pretty good.
I think mindless violence and feeling sorry about yourself before MORE MINDLESS VIOLENCE is pretty much a waste.

[spoiler]I'll admit it's been years since I watched it, but nothing deep really stuck with me other than the fact she died, and the series exposition involved mindlessly killing about a hundred or so people.[/spoiler] And it's not you, the viewer, feeling bad - it is instead the characters.
