I'd think there'd need to be a comma between "flat" and "dry." I'd try breaking up the first sentence. Too many commas in a sentence may be looked down upon.
Also, "an exciting atmosphere" sounds kind of weird. Maybe "an atmosphere of fun and excitement."

I thought of the comma between flat and dry as well. The trouble is, that sentence sounds like I'm avoiding flat, i'm avoiding dry areas etc. Thanks for the help on the second one though. I think for the first I just need to re-do the whole sentence. Two more: American University is an open campus in Washington D.C. (I think this may be just the word choice of open campus, since American is technically a school that has a campus you know? Could it be that easy?) Packs of college kids swarm some of the nation's best skiing at nearby resorts like Breckenridge, Keystone, Beaver Creek, and Vail. (I think this has multiple mistakes).
