How to keep all weapons relevant...

(This is going to be one long ass post...don't say I didn't warn you....) There has been much discussion since TDB dropped regarding older weapons (especially Vault of Glass weapons) becoming obsolete due to their attack rating staying at 300, with no upgrade path to increase them. I am one of those players who wishes to keep all weapons I choose to use relevant throughout my Destiny experience. There are those who are against this however...the argument usually follows that "other MMOs" work the same way Destiny is now, with current gear becoming yesterdays news when expansions arrive. This is an extremely flimsy argument for a couple reasons. One, just because one or many games does something should never mean other games follow suit, or innovation dwindles. Second, other progression/loot based/RPGs don't always do this. The best example is the Demons Souls/Dark Souls (soon to be Bloodborne) series. A series of games with a MAJOR focus on gear (as well as challenge)That falchion you picked up in your first hour? It can follow the same upgrade path as every other weapon in the game, and be just as deadly as any other weapon. Because of this, the souls series in particular has massive reply value. A seemingly limitless sea of weapons and gear to experiment with...and a ton of fun to boot. The reason our old weapons in Destiny become obsolete is because with each expansion, it appears as though max attack values will rise, and our favorite guns, our shadow prices and fatebringers and devil you knows...fade into obscurity. Which got me thinking...WHY DOESN'T ATTACK COME FROM ME, THE HERO WITH ALL THIS LIGHT CRAP? I mean why is it even a thing? If we agree our Guardians power comes from "light" and each gun has "impact", then what the hell other factor in our firearms manifests itself as "attack"? Which leads me to believe that making "attack" a factor of our light level, NOT OUR WEAPONS, would solve a lot of issues and make a lot of people happy, while requiring relatively little work from the developers. So with each increasing light level, your attack increases as well. As long time players are well aware, light level plays a bigger part in damage dealt anyway. On top of this, ALL your old weapons become useful again. Even blues you used to love. The hook, the advantage to using a legendary or exotic, is in the perks. "Wait dude...wtf are we supposed to do with those 5 nodes on all purples and yellows that increase attack?" Well to answer that, we need to talk about perks for a sec. There's two kinds of perks in this game right now. One that is literally a perk, like outlaw. It drastically increases reload speed, but only when a very specific condition is met. Then there is a perk like field scout - this directly and PERMENENTLY increases a stat on your weapon. THIS IS NOT A PERK, this is a BUFF, this is increasing a stat requiring nothing else from the player. So here's a thought, and I'm sure this would require some tweaking, but lets call those 5 attack nodes 1-5 1.flared magwell 2.field scout 3.perfect balance 4.Hammer Forged 5.Excessive Force (a new one - raises impact by 5%) Now greens and blues don't have as many of these nodes, so legendaries and exotics will always be better, but you can have fun with them again, because they will still work--pulling their impact/damage from your characters attack level, not some lame number attached to the gun itself. VOG guns now remain relevant, as well as your TDYKs, Shadow Prices, etc. With just this change, we have a much larger variety of loadouts and weapons to choose from - now bungie can have those old guns rotate vendor stock daily, random perks, etc, and lot more people are happy. We have choice and variety, and weapons you grow attached to can stay with you. Bugie will need to work harder to make new weapons we want to use (hint - want us to use Word of Crota over Fatebringer now? Put that hive explosion from necrochasm on it, and take necrochasm back to the drawingboard) This is just something that has been rattling around in my head and a friend of mines for awhile, and we would like some civil, constructive feedback from both you players and maybe Deej just acknowledging he saw this. I'm sure the diehard MMO folks will disagree and that is fine, so let 'er rip... EDIT: changed post title
