Halo 1 PC 1.08 has released

See that? Good. Now bookmark this page, because you'll have to come back here if you want to see it again. As an added treat for our loyal users still playing Halo PC after 5 years, I got clearance to discontinue the CD check as part of this patch! This doesn't change the licensing (don't pass around your disc), and you still need your unique product key to play online, but I figure your CD is probably pretty scratched after all this time, and it deserves a break. Anyway, on to the patch... This is build 1.0.8.616, and is the official version of the test release from the other day. To give you confidence that you're playing on a patched server, this build is not backwards-compatible with old servers, nor will the new server work with old clients. For this reason, I'm posting the patches here a day and a half before I'll mark them for auto-updating in-game. This way, server operators have a little time to roll out the new bits before Friday's auto-patch of the client. If you haven't been following the pre-release threads, this patch contains several fixes for server-crashing security bugs, and that's it. As I have discussed elsewhere, anti-aimbotting is an arms race that we're not going to enter for this old game, and this patch doesn't address that or any other feature-level changes. I should also note that Bungie does not officially support Halo PC (which is owned by Microsoft, not Bungie) but since the build machine is under my desk and not at MS, I fixed these several bugs as a favor to the community. I can't promise any future support, nor can I open-source the code for community development. There are 4 patch files. If you aren't sure which one you want, you want the first one only. Halo PC 1.08 Patch Halo PC 1.08 Dedicated Server Halo Custom Edition 1.08 Patch Halo Custom Edition 1.08 Dedicated Server To use the patch files, you must already have the corresponding game installed. To update your dedicated server install, just drop the appropriate file over the old one. Halo "Custom Edition" is an "unsupported" (but popular) version of the game that allows user-created maps, and is available for download from Gearbox and other mirror sites. Remember, the game will require this patch to play online starting Friday (and I'll update the MOTD at that time too.) Enjoy! -Roger

 • Cool. Hey, I haven't played Halo 1 PC for a long long time. Do I still have to lead off my target with the sniper/m6D pistol by about five feet? It wasn't an issue for me, but I thought it was silly after playing the Xbox version. Thanks!

 • Good news for everyone waiting for the new sightjacker. Someone over on Modacity, net has made one for Custom edition and is working on the PC and trial versions. Personally I would say wait a bit as the one up now is a prototype and the newer ones will probably have better quality. ;)

 • I have a problem with halo custom edition now...and I believe it has something to do with the patch..Whenever I try joining or hosting an online game it connects to the server and right before the game starts it says "The game has closed down". I tried this and many other servers numerous times but it still said the same thing "The game has closed down". I have never used an Aimbot before and my devmode was turned off so dont try saying that was the problem. I also reinstalled Halo ce twice. Can anyone tell me what to do?!?!?! P.S. I could join and host games fine until this patch came up. Right when i installed it all these problems ocurred :(.

 •
People who use widescreen CAN'T play the way it was meant to be played. While you have fun at 70 FOV, we're at a FOV that seems to be 55-60. You have an advatage over people who use it, you can see much more than we can.
I play on a widescreen monitor as well and I have been called a bot on several occasions even though I'm really more of a capper than a killer. Not to mention I have no problem "facelifting" people with a shotgun and theres another guy in my clan with a much larger monitor who is the "king of facelifts." No mods, not even command line args. Seriously, don't tell me that widescreens can't play Halo "the way its meant to be played" without a hack because its a straight out lie. If it really bothers you that much then play it windowed or use -vidmode. ;)

 •
Posted by: Benny Jay518 THIS IS HORRIBLE! The cd check thing is great, but none of my mods work anymore. for example: my 3rd person mod, chase cam mod, fly cam mod, and any other camera mods do not work anymore. i just get exeption errors as soon as i open the programs. I make machinimas, and I need these. bungie, please get this fixed! I have to have these mods for my machinima! P.S. I know its this patch, because as soon as I installed it my mods stopped working.
These programs are simply only compatible with Halo 1.07, they won't work on any other version of Halo. There is nothing Bungie can do about that, it's up to whoever made these programs to update them. Surely you can enjoy the game how it was meant to be played, for the time being.

 • Benny, The mods are none of Bungies concern as they're cheats/hacks and made by a 3rd party programmer. How about trying to play the game the way it was meant to be played for once. ;) If you need to record stuff fraps should still work. The mac issue I hope gets resolved as I have a friend I wanna get Mac Halo as a graduation present and it'd suck if he can't play on the server I have set up. [Edited on 08.10.2008 6:52 AM PDT]

 • Mac Users, did you read Mac Moose's post? He's right. If you go to the list of servers, search for one that is EMPTY. You can jump in and hijack the server. Yes, as long as you are in the server, PC users can't get in. If PC users are in the server, the Mac guys can't get in. Sawnose, please pass this on to your Mac patch contact. I would guess this will speed things up a bit for the Mac patch. Hope so anyway. Thanks. [Edited on 08.10.2008 6:47 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: sawnose
Posted by: barryn So I guess this means that until someone releases a patch the covers the original Mac version and the Universal Binary Mac version, all Mac users will not be able to play Halo on any of the updated servers, right? Who would we look to to get such a patch created, or are we all gonna be out of luck?
I've been in contact with the right person to make this happen.
any progress on that, did they specify if they're gonna get rid of the cd for mac?

 • Greetings Mac user..and the only thing that can be done right now is wait and do the next best thing, till the patch for us comes out. When a server you normally use shows up on the server list....jump on. You see, if a Mac player is on the server then a PC person cannot get on and it is ours to use. This has worked well today. It may not be like we are used to but if we are quick, we can use any server for Mac gameplay :) I too wonder why Bungie did not communicate with MacSoft (Destineer) earlier. Maybe they don't like the Apple vs. PC commercials :)

 • Hi, I have been having some problems installing halo pc. i meet all the requirements of installing halo but it still wont work. at first when it says its copying the game folders, an error application comes up and says " The application failed to initialize properly (0x0000006). Click on OK to terminate the application. and shows 2 times.but still begins to install. when it begins gamespy arcade doesnt copy correctly and i ignore it. a little later the msxmlenu.msi. folder doesnt copy correctly either. so i ignore it again. after those are done it continues to install. further on in the installation, at around 83%-98%... yes... 98% very depressing... it says that my disk drive is full and cant continue. even though i have 15GB left on my hard disk. it usually stops on the MAP folders. if you have any idea what the problem would be, please tell me what i could do to fix it. Thank You. ~A Halo Pc Player

 • I think its great that the guys have worked on a patch so that we dont need our CD's. fantastic. oh wait i own a Mac. I'm not a hardcore PC gamer, but i loved the small close-knit community of Halo CE and its great to just kick back and enjoy halo like it all used to be. No offense to anyone here, but does it not seem logical to talk to Destineer or MacSoft first before releasing the PC version of the update? server search returns nothing. i may sound angry in this post, but im not that angry. i'm just dumbfounded as to why this would skip anyones minds? wouldn't it be the first thing to check? i feel sorry for the people that were really into Halo CE for Mac, because it COULD be a while

 • you can always do it manually when you first start halo up. pull up the console and type "mouse_acceleration 0" you'd have to do it each time though.

 • I have a question regarding a Halo optimization tweak guide I had read.
» OF MICE AND MEN For some unfathomable reason, there is no menu option to turn off Halo’s mouse acceleration, which makes fast aiming all but impossible. Until Gearbox gets Halo’s menus in order, online gamers should create a CFG (configuration) file to turn off mouse acceleration. It’s a very simple thing to do with Windows Notepad. • Click on the Start button • Move up to All Programs, then to Accessories • Click on Notepad • In Notepad, type mouse_acceleration 0 • Click on File, and then on Save As • Save this CFG in your Halo game folder • Name it something clever like mouse.cfg • Change the Save as type: box to All Files • Click the Save button • Now find your Halo icon in your Start menu • Right-click on it and select Properties • At the end of the Target: box, add a space and the following: -exec mouse.cfg • Click on OK This tells Windows to run your mouse.cfg as it starts halo.exe.
I followed this tweak and it definitely helped to smooth out my mouse when I was playing in servers. Unfortunately, after the patch was released, it no longer works. I overwrote the mouse.cfg file with the same settings hoping it might work but sadly it didn't. I double checked the shortcut that I load Halo from to make sure it still had the "-exec mouse.cfg" command parameter and it did. Do you have any suggestions for me? If there's nothing I can do, I totally understand and I'll try and live with it, but it definitely was helpful.

 • Well so far all aimbots released before the patch are not working with it...so i guess it could be an anti-aimbot after all. Everyone i know who has one get an Gathering exception data when they try to use it and the game closes on us. Regular mods are unaffected as far as we can see...all our mods are intact no problem there....but SJ and aimbots are not working...so we can celebrate for a now that all those noobs who use bots to play cant lol.....now they need to show their skills...oh wait...they don't have any :)

 •
Posted by: Btcc22 Not sure if anybody else has this, but it seems that a memory address reference (or whatever) needs to be updated for 1.08. I've tried on two machines and get the same error upon exiting the game on both: http://touringnet.co.uk/misc/hpc108error.jpg I thought that looked like an address in the Halo CE range (been a long time since, so maybe I'm wrong), but anyway, there we go.
Toucan is an Xfire DLL.
