Friend mad because I called him fat? I need advice.

Hello everybody. I have a friend who I've known for maybe 3 years, I go to his house a lot and we play ps4 and xbox1 sometimes, but mostly we talk about girls. Anyways yesterday I was at his house and he was telling me how jealous he was of how I started dating a girl named Sue(Fake name). I went on to tell him "You know Brad(fake name), you could probably date girls as hot as the ones I date if you weren't so fat. I said it in a joking way but deep down I was hoping he got the message, to lose some weight. He's 5'9" and around 230lbs. He looked at me and said "wow, really dude?". Then he says he's tired and asks me to leave, so I go home and today I called him to hang out and he didn't pick up, and his mom said he left the house in the morning and hasn't come back. Maybe he went to get a gym membership LOL just kidding, but how can I make things right and also motivate him to lose weight?

  • He must've considered you a good friend, and to hear it from you may have hurt him more than anyone else could've. I'd suggest apologizing in person and being honest about why you said what you said, but in a nice way.

  • Despite the fact that he should lose weight and be more healthy, you're statement was pretty douchey.

  • Sounds like he might be a little insecure with his body weight. If he wants to lose body fat then he is first going to have to accept the fact that he is overweight and then make a mental commitment to change his ways. It's always easier to make that commitment if he has some one alongside him supporting him throughout the way. So if I were you, I would apologize to him and let him know that you didn't mean to hurt him. Also try to help set a good example, even if it means you have to change your own diet to reflect a healthier one. I would also try doing activities other than sitting inside all the time. Try inviting him to the park, throw a football or Frisbee around, or get a group together and go on a hike. Along the way make sure you never poke fun of him, or say anything that could be taken as an insult but always keep encouraging him. A healthy diet and different forms of exercise will be a good start. Hope that helps!

  • Providing you both have mobile phones I'd text him as he's obviously avoiding your calls but will read the text out of curiosity or anger. Just say something along the lines of: I'm sorry, I didn't mean it as it came out. I was focusing on the game and wasn't concentrating on what we were talking about. I meant to say that you're nice guy and girls like you. But I feel that you're somewhat reserved and not confident around girls which is stopping you from getting close to them. I may have incorrectly attributed that to your weight and again I'm sorry if I am wrong in thinking that but I really can't see any other reason why you're not putting yourself out there. Something like that anyway.

  • Go out of your way to apologize and tell him you're an ass. Soon. He knows he's fat and doesn't need to be reminded.
