Ask a Network Engineer

Recently, it was requested that we invite a Network Engineer to talk about how you fine people clash in violent concert within the construct of our games. To learn more about this profession, what would you ask someone who practices the discipline? This is not a Mail Sack. This is a chance for you to learn about a member of our team, what they do, and how they prepared themselves for those career challenges. Go!

 •
Posted by: x Foman123 x Yep. Also, what is your position on using Vorpal Positron Capacitors as opposed to Hyper Active Post Traumatic Glorx Brains in order to meet YOLO and ROFL requirements?
I believe the prerequisites to meet such requirements deal with the conductivity of the flux capacitor along the calculated vortex of the Millennium Falcon as it spirals into the Omega Centauri. Understood?

 •
Posted by: dazarobbo 1. Which would you say is more useful in subnetting (esp. VLSM): Understanding of binary arithmetic or experience? Or do you cheat and use a subnet calculator? ;) 2. How prevalent is IOS? Am I more likely to find it or something else? 3. What advice do you have for determining how many redundant VLAN trunks to use? 4. Do you advocate the use of IPv6, IPv4, another network protocol, or a hybrid (ie. IPv6 tunnelling) (especially in new networks)? 5. What can you say about Cisco accreditation? What opportunities open up for someone with a CCNP qualification as compared to a CCNA qualification? 6. In practice, how important/useful is it to understand the theoretical components behind how the network works? eg. CSMA/CD operation, delay (processing, queuing, transmission, propagation), etc... 7. I've heard layer 3 switches/switching is all the rage. How prevalent is their use? 8. What tips do you have for more thoroughly understanding how to use ACL wildcards? 9. Is it "better" to use a dedicated machine as a firewall or a router with ACLs? 10. How often is the creation of VLANs essential? 11. Do you still find links using PAP? 12. Can you confirm for me that using CHAP with a fallback to PAP is inherently insecure?
Yep. Also, what is your position on using Vorpal Positron Capacitors as opposed to Hyper Active Post Traumatic Glorx Brains in order to meet YOLO and ROFL requirements?

 •
Posted by: Enormous Corgi You seem to be... confused. Network Engineer != IT.
Network engineering is mos def IT in most contexts. Tier 3 and above, but still definitely IT. Networks are never the end, they're the means, hence the relevant engineers are definitely within the realms of IT. Probably just a confusion of terms. Luckily my question applies either way. Foresight, yeahh.
Posted by: Enormous Corgi
Posted by: Hujgup Network Engineer seems an awfully specific jop title. Does Bungie's internal network really crash that often?
You seem to be... confused. Network Engineer != IT.
Though the gaming industry equates Network Engineers with programmers who handle netcode, a clarification should be made. dazarobbo was right in assuming these series of questions are meant for Network Engineers ie. Information Technology personnel who specialize in computer Networking (and often have a Cisco networking certification). This is the technical definition of a Network Engineer. This article probably refers to software engineers who specialize in Networking - technically Network Software Engineers (see: Butcher, Timmins, Aldridge). I'd compare this label confusion to the Reach's co-op multiplayer lead (Lars) and the competitive multiplayer lead (Carney). One is primarily responsible for Firefight and the other for traditional versus multiplayer. The Reach credits don't specify this difference. For those of us who care, it'd be awesome if the Destiny games could have more specific credits, as opposed to listing job titles. I realize, especially with the new universe, everyone contributes to every facet of the games. However, wouldn't it be nice to actually know the team responsible for client netcode? • Was university your first engagement with networks? If not, what was? n.b. My experience started when I was about 15, and had to port-forward my network to enable hosting on WC3 - now I'm doing a bachelor of I.T. majoring in Networking

 • Judging from previous job postings, I'm pretty sure when they say Network Engineers, they're referring to the guys (and gals?) who get the multiplayer and-the-like systems in the engine up and running. IE, an engineer of code, software. Refer to the 'I shot you first' presentation by David Aldridge. Versus an IT Engineer who would be of the ragtag group that keeps the Bungie IT infrastructure (LAN, WAN, computers, help desk, etc) 'running' like a projectile in a vacuum: without friction. IE, an engineer of hardware (obviously IT is both hardware and software, with a dash of peopleware, but I think you can see what I'm getting at). And calling a Network Engineer a 'Multiplayer Engineer' would be narrowing the position. Interacting with a file share thru the game, interfacing with XBL, etc are all problems a Network Engineer at Bungie would probably solve, on top of making sure your blue dude shoots the red dude without error (wait, that 'error' is a feature, not a bug!).
