Rainbow Six 4: "Lockup"

Rainbow Six fans, I have bad news for you. Red Storm and Ubisoft have sold their souls for a cheap buck on this sequel. (They've made some good games, but this is really not one of them.) Notice the subject says "Lockup" not "Lockdown." That's because this is one of the buggiest games I've ever played, especially on a console. Case in point: Southpaw thumbstick layout doesn't work at all. When you select it, the left thumbstick does literally nothing, and the right thumbstick does the wrong movements. Also contributing to my "lockup" nickname is that the game actually does lock up sometimes. I've heard reports of several people having trouble with the game crashing and lagging badly. In the few days I've had the game, I've experienced the same effects. While hosting and playing in multiplayer games, network lag is often noticable, and even worse, local machine "lag" is present. (i.e. the graphics engine is too weak to keep up with the overdone effects such as fog and heat blur, so the framerate drops to crappy levels and when this happens on the host machine, everyone else receives bonus network lag on top of their own local lag. Until recently, medic characters in PEC Mode were unable to repair their medpacks, so once they were damaged/used, they couldn't use them anymore. (They've fixed this bug thankfully. It was apparently a bug in their XBL Server code.) The "controller bug" is only one of many significant bugs in the game, but in my opinion it is by far the most important for several reasons. It illustrates one of two scenarios, neither of which is at all good. One scenario is that they did hardly any testing at all on the game, not caring about quality (or even making it work). The other scenario is that they did some testing, knew about the bugs, and shipped the game anyway. I honestly have a hard time deciding which one is more true, or which one is worse. If I can immediately find a showstopping, unavoidable bug while changing a single option in my preferences, someone didn't do their job in Quality Assurance. Now, I've ranted enough about the game's technical bugs. (Check out their official forum for more bug ranting and listing - the list is HUGE!) Let's move on to the gameplay. Fundamentally, Rainbow Six is supposed to revolve around the squad-based tactical counter-terrorism theme. Lockdown does not follow this pedigree faithfully. The whole feel is more arcade shooter, and run 'n gun in nature. That totally contradicts what the game is supposed to be about - slower paced, thought out tactics. Strategies are hardly needed in campaign/co-op mode. Just run in, gun down the bad guys, repeat. Multiplayer is much of the same. Spawn camping is horrifically bad in this game. Level designs aren't bad, but the mechanisms used to artificially block your path are contrived and very lame. I have witnessed many times a path blocked by something as trivial as a turned over chair in a hallway. If an elite counter terrorism squad can be diverted by knocking down a chair, this country is in deep trouble. There are key points in several missions that prevent you from proceeding by mysteriously rendering a door invulnerable and locked until you complete a trigger condition. The door then mysteriously opens itself. The AI in the game is aweful. On the default setting (which is now the only setting in co-op games for some reason), the bad guys will just stare at you for a moment and finally decide they should shoot at you. That doesn't do them much good though. As long as you stand completely still, they probably won't hit you. I've let a terrorist shoot at me from the end of a short hallway for minutes while I stand still, and they continually miss. They were only able to hit me when I strafed into their fire pattern. In Rainbow Six 3, the bad guys actually shot me and it hurt when they did it. Overall, I give the game a 3 out of 5. It tries to appease several genres and styles without catering to any of them, making it entirely underwhelming and average. I say don't buy it now. Rent it perhaps, and maybe buy it later when the price drops (and after they release some needed patches). It's not worth $50. There's my rant. :)

  • I've just realised that Rainbow Six Lockdown is actually not as bad as I first thought. I bought it because I wanted a decent online shooter cos I am bored with Halo 2. And as I said earlier in this thread the game sucks ass. But after playing it I played Halo 2 and Lockdown made me see again how good and fun Halo 2 is, because of the contrast. So now I've got back into Halo 2. So if your bored of Halo 2 buy Lockdown, not because its a good alternative but because it'll make you like halo 2 again. Simple. And then play Lockdown for a bit every time your tiring of Halo 2. Thanks Ubisoft for making a game so bad it reminds me of how good Halo is. Hmmm that wasn't that well explained but nevermind I'm sure you can understand. [Edited on 9/15/2005]

  • Black looks kickass, but EA has a habit of screwing everything up. God I hate EA with a passion. And yes, I would advise taaking Lockdown back and getting Burnout:Revenge. It should be out this week.

  • Yeah sure, you post here Fiurha. But not my group. j/k. I like some of the Rainbow Six games. But I can't really play them because the only way I can is go downstairs to a six-year-old who has a puppy crush on me.

  • What I've sen/heared of Black makes it a great promise for a game. About the new R 6 3 game ; I haven't played it yet , just bought it for my sister as a present. maybe I should unwrap the completely intact box and trade it in for a better game :)

  • Sadly, I made the mistake of buying this game. Disappointing. Very disappointing. Although killing enemies with proximity mines is really fun, the lag is horrible. I think Red Storm blows as a developer. They put so much effort into things like weapons and gadgets, that they forgot to remove the suck. What kind of testers do they have working there? How can you not notice the glaring flaws? "Hey, these textures look like a dog's ass, and I can't move at all because I'm lagging so bad! The game is perfect!" I can't play Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike, because every time I put my disc in, it says there's an error. I've only actually played the game like 5 times, and it's fun. It's a shame that they didn't make the game capable of working. This one is inexcusable. I know my disc isn't defective, because it boots up, and it loads, but instead of going to the main menu, I get the error screen. Maybe they should stop putting so much effort into putting the right amount of ridges on an APC tire, and fix all the obvious bugs in their games. The only other FPS I'm buying for the Xbox is Black. Made by Criterion, the people who brought you Burnout 3. Hopefully it won't blow like this one does. [Edited on 9/15/2005]

  • I unfortunately just made the mistake of buying this cos i really wanted a new XB live shooter (am a little bored of Halo 2 now). I so badly wanted a new shooter I ingnored all the bad reviews. And I give it 3/10. It really is that bad. Its one of the worst games from Ubisoft in a long time. Black arrow and Rainbow six 3 are sooo much better, and I didn't think they were that great, although good. It really does suck, so much that I wouldn't really no where to start explaining why. Thankgod I got it cheap for a reasonable deal on ebay (£22). I may be able to sell it again now and break even. [Edited on 9/15/2005]

  •
Posted by: SatanInASweater Doors only open when you complete an objective? What about the first level in Halo 2? You had to clear the areas that the boarders came in before a door opens? Or The Truth and Reconciliation where you have to kill those Hunters before the door opened (the ones in the ship, not the ones right before the ship, that was explainable). Anyway, I read the OXM reviews, and the models do look pretty bad.
The doors were locked down to stop the borders. That's the point of security doors. On the T&R, if Cortana did tried to open the hack the door that would cause MC 's reactions to lower and they would all die. Everything has a reason in Halo.

  • If you're a console gamer just stick to Rainbow Six 3 Black Arrow or Ghost Recon 2 Summit Strike till Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (XBOX360) comes out. [Edited on 9/14/2005]

  • Im just going to rent the game before deciding on buying it, I tend to see less lag in rbs3 games than i have seen in halo. In halo lag is constant.

Finally someone else thinks this game sucks. Black Arrow was way funner. I tried to return it after I bought it but stupid Best Buy doesn't give refunds or store credit for opened products. So I traded it in for San Andreas.

  • Summit strike is tactical and way better then Six...i have back arrow and hate it, especially since the scope of your sniper takes up half the screen when you aren't even zoomed in...
