• Hmm. Personally, I can do without them fine. I can also live with them if they're the simple kind. Ala anti-example. I don't want to see posts and sigs full of jumping smilies. Forums are about the text of the post you're reading. Also, if they didn't fit into the same theme as the surrounding graphics it would just be wierd (like the people who use colored text already). Anyway, that's my nickel.

 • =) / ;) / =( / =P / =D And so many more accomplishable with a few symbols. I'd rather not have people filling their posts full of smileys and no actual content. Or you might as well not have a Forum, rather have a keyboard mashing contest.

 • I think one should be able to insert the marathon into your posts. But that's just me.

 • Smileys create the potential for smiley bombs - some of the most lethal forms of spam, ever.

 •
Posted by: ObbiQuiet Smileys create the potential for smiley bombs - some of the most lethal forms of spam, ever.
That's the main reason I never join off-Bungie.net forums that fans make. They're usually filled with at least one or two guys that have to fill at least 3 lines with smilies. Then there's the test period. When everyone goes through just to see if they can make a post using the smilies. Bah.

 • Emoticons are bad when used by the wrong people... But, unfortunately, the wrong people do infect B.net. I have seen some off-Bungie fan forums that have users who only use emoticons as they were meant to be used: to express emotion. There are great benefits emoticons, however. You can avoid unnecessary flame wars by using them, since many flame wars start because of confusion regarding the posters' tones of texts. Emoticons make the tone clear. If someone is merely joking, they can use ;-) or :-P, and the point will be clear. But luckily, we still have emoticons at our disposal... they're just not graphic. And text-based emoticons are rarely abused, since spammers are often too lazy to type all that, and it doesn't really look good in the end.

 • Everybody likes smileys to SOME extent, but thats what sets Bungienet apart, thoughtful staff, and no SMILEYS! its a great forum, becuase users actually talk to each other with words! not smileys if you want them, use msn lol.

 • Good God. What is this world coming to when in order for a forum to be worth visiting or posting to, there have to be stupid little smilies every other word. I personally hate smilies with a passion. I feel that all forums that allow the users to insert smilies into their writing are completely worthless. First of all, They distract the reader from the actual point of the forum: THE WRITING! When those stupid little colorful blobs pop up on my screen I can not help but wonder what poor lifeless cretin actually enjoys them and thinks others enjoy them as well. Second of all, I wonder why this person isn't in therapy. If you have that much trouble expressing your true emotions in writing, then you have no right to post forums at any popular website. GET THERAPY!! After you get the therapy and CAN express your feelings in writing, then maybe you should be allowed to post on a popular forum. thirdly it is extremely juvenile and feminine. Think back to fifth grade when all the girls had cooties. What did they draw during story time? SMILEY FACES! I am 14 years old and some of the less mature girls still draw smiley faces in study hall. I feel the same contempt for them as I do for you poor high school students who sit in front your computers all day "writing" in forums and 'oooing' and 'ahhhing' over stupid little animations. There are much more important things to look forward to ON A SITE DETICATED TO BUNGIE GAMES besides "how come we dont have smilies they are prtty cool!" One last question: what do smiley faces have to do with a website whose product involves blowing the hell out of all of your friends? I want a forum full of content, not immature little pictures. Think about what I have told you and ask yourself weather you still want Bungie to allow smilies. [Edited on 1/11/2005 8:45:17 PM]

 • I could care less about something as inatimate and worthless as a stupid smily. Seriously, you go on a forum to express something, not show that you are some idiot who is too lazy to type a word or two. There is a difference between a smily and an opinion; by no means are they the same. Good grief, say what you feel, man, don't show that you are to shallow to move your fingers to the keyboard and type actual words. If you give and argument through smileys, you have no argument at all. Say, if you have an argument, i would like to hear it. And please, don't post any smileys, it will only show your lack of intelligence.

 • Hey, Evil Otto has a smiley face in his avatar... But that doesn't count. I don't think smileys are really necessary here. They appear in so many other places that it's good to just get from it all. Besides, color makes the world go round, right?

 • I don't think that smileys are really needed on Bungie.net unless they're being used to show emotion in a text. Showing emotion can prevent many flame-wars, which of course helps the mods out (i.e. making a mom joke and putting ":-P" in your post.) As far as moving smileys go, I agree with everyone that said the reader should be concentrating on the text of a post, not how many smileys are in it. As far as color goes, I don't think it is such a bad thing, depending upon the situation. Some members think its alright to blind people with, lets say huge bright pink posts. Granted, using colors grabs the attention of the reader, but most will think "Ooooooh, Pink. Its perdy." rather than "Nice point with that" or "Yeah, that's a great idea." On the other hand, color can be used to add emphasis in a post which can be very useful. I look at it this way... its an extremely useful tool when not abused. With that said... -Necro ... :-P [Edited on 1/10/2005 8:05:01 PM]

 • Personally I still think Bungie should not introduce smilies. Color is almost as bad as smilies, but not quite. There are many much easier ways to show your tone of voice than to type in colors. They are hard to read. look up at what Necro124 said in red. How can you tell what his tone of voice that is? Plus its hard to read. I don't know about all the other cassual forum readers, but I don't want to spend all my time deciphering what people are trying to say. There are many ways to express how you are saying something without using smilies or colores. It isn't that hard. IF YOU ARE YELLING USE CAPTOLS!. and if you can't understand simple sarcastic jokes without a ;-P next to it you don't deserve to be on any online forum. Though i don't hate color nearly as much as I hate smilies I still can't stand when people use an unreadable color. If any Bungie employee reads these forums, please don't add smilies. You have a good website, don't ruin it with something as completely worthless as smilies. [Edited on 1/11/2005 8:49:58 PM]

 • Well you could use my smilies. I have a set of about 30 Halo smilies I made. Here's three example: BLAM! Plasma Stuck Jackal If you like them I can send the rest, that goes for all. I don't care what you use them for as long as I get credit. As you can see most are still images, I do have a few 5-6 frame animations but they are not annoying. - Trigun

 • True those aren't quite as annoying as other smilies, but what would their point be in a forum? They don't actually have any point when it comes to getting a point across. They are pretty cool though.
