The Battle of Twilight Gap "Counterstrike" Episode Two

Episode Two Crumbled stone fell from the ceiling and dusted Ikora Rey’s head, unsettled by the blasts that rocked the garrison. Hundreds of spider tanks have been launching shells at the walls for more than half a day, determined to break the City’s defenses and shatter the wards the Traveler cast down from its alien mass. Fools. It would take more than that. “Have all Guardians arrived in the City?” asked the Speaker. Saladin nodded. “Most have returned from their wanderings,” he replied, stroking his diamond-blonde beard. “Unfortunately, reports suggest it has been difficult getting through the Fallen perimeter. More than half of the jumpships attempting to cross their lines have been shot down, and it isn’t any better on the ground where troops are thickest.” “Advise those on the outside to not attempt coming back to the City.” The Speaker sighed and shook his head. “It would be best not to lose more lives in such a dangerous endeavor.” He turned his mask to Andal. “Word from your scouts?” “Cayde has sent a report back from the fortresses around Twilight Gap,” said Andal, face wreathed in shadows from his black hood. “The Fallen are focusing their attention on there, the only place they could easily pass into the City." It was as Ikora suspected. The City was enclosed on all sides, except for one point in the East that made finishing the wall impossible. A mountainous ravine that served as a perfect funnel for enemies. It was the most heavily guarded site, excluding the Tower itself. There were five fortresses nestled within Twilight Gap and they would push back any threat that made to harm the last human civilization on Earth. Even the Fallen. “The Guardians posted there are battle-hardened,” said Ikora, nodding. “The best we’ve got. The Fallen will not breach the security, especially when Future War Cult, Dead Orbit, and New Monarchy are at the helm." Another explosion shook the walls. “Where we should focus our own attention on is the wall,” said Andal, flicking off more debris from his armor. His gristled face was scrunched up in annoyance. “There are six-hundred spider tanks surrounding us and three Ketch starships in low-orbit continuously sending out dropships like gnats.” Saladin huffed. “Nonsense,” he snapped. “The Iron Lords did not build a fence made out of glass. There is no way their pebbles can break through. Shaxx holds the north and Zavala the south. I have full faith in their capabilities.” “No one is doubting your Titans.” “Saladin is right,” said the Speaker, cocking his head. “The Fallen will not pass.” Ikora had to agree. The Titans atop the walls of the City were of the highest quality, born from the Order of Gatewatch: a clan that specialized in training Defender Titans. Saint-14 had stood in their very ranks. It was unfortunate he had perished in his crusade, for he would have benefited them greatly in these trials. Andal cursed. “I’m sorry, but do you not feel the power of the blasts around us?!” he asked. “If none of you’ve noticed, the Traveler isn’t in the best of shape, and the reason the Wards haven’t cracked yet, is because the Traveler is slowing down the warheads. Who knows when its shields will drop.” “Enough,” said Ikora, tired from smelling his fear. “Follow me.” She led the leaders of the City outside of the garrison to where her phalanx of Warlocks and Cryptarchs waded among a cloud glowing dots in the air, skin lit bright from the speckled mist. Most wouldn’t understand what was going on, but Ikora knew. The Sunsingers had raised projections of live constellations from across the universe, determining which stars would be best useful for the nova attack she was about to rain down on the Fallen. “How goes our little experiment?” said Ikora, towards an Exo deep in the stars. Eriana-3’s metal plates shifted into a smile. “Excellent.” “What celestial body did you choose?” “We’ve chosen the largest collapsing star in Calliope, the farthest galaxy we could get our hands on,” she replied. “It is of the best size and motion for us to gather its energy and not too far that it would sever our portal connection. The Voidwalkers will take care of the rest.” Ikora was impressed by the Exo. Usually when Voidwalkers used their nova bombs, they took whatever energy they could get their hands on, whether it be from a collapsing star of the faintest link or one that was so powerful they could hardly handle its power. Results always varied. But now, the Praxic Warlocks discovered a means through their own solar abilities to find the perfect subject—a hypergiant star in a galaxy billions of light years away. Ikora didn’t understand the mechanics, but it was supposedly an ideal combination. Eriana and her group of Warlocks closed their eyes and reached into the depths of space for the star in Calliope. The air vibrated with spectral power. Voidwalkers stood at the edge of the wall in a circle, hands toward the sky, reaching for the power the Sunsingers were providing and soon a violet haze rose around the Warlocks. A single sphere grew between them. It kept growing and growing, so large it had the potential to engulf everyone on the wall. “Now!” ordered Eriana. The Warlocks dug in with their arms and cast out their nova bomb. It eclipsed the very sun, casting a shadow over the Fallen across the battlefield as it glided toward the cluster of spider tanks. The Walkers attempted to drag itself away from destruction, but it was inevitable. The bomb landed in flash and fire. A thick cloud of roiling energy consumed them, shredding the Fallen lines. A tank, eaten in half, teetered and rolled down into a crater the size of several buildings. Ikora’s mouth went slightly slack with wonder. It worked better than she had hoped it would. More Voidwalkers assembled themselves on the wall, ready to rip apart the legions before them. “That was spectacularly done,” said the Speaker, clapping. Saladin laughed. “Look at them! Their forces are in pandemonium!” “We're gonna have to cut short our celebration,” said Andal, reading something off of a glowing tablet. “I’ve received reports from my scouts at the Twilight Gap. Another Ketch has arrived, belonging to the House of Winter. The fortress is being overrun.” EPISODE ONE EPISODE THREE EPISODE FOUR EPISODE FIVE DISCLAIMER: THIS SERIES IS A WORK OF FAN FICTION, SO CREATIVE LIBERTIES HAVE BEEN TAKEN.
