Need advice on how to aim with the controller?

I am very reasonably dexterous, or even perhaps better than average. But I am having problems in aiming with the controller. After testing different settings, at the moment I have the look sensitivity set to maximum, as in 10. That said, there seems to be only two settings on the right thumb stick: either move slowly or sudenly very fast. There is not much in-between. Aiming down sight is even worse. So typically I either cannot track the target fast enough or my aim is suddenly all over the place. My complaint is that the aiming is not gradual enough - it is like a curve, starting off flat and suddenly spike upwards. What have I done wrong? How can I improve? Please advise. Many thanks!

  • Buy control freaks (GTS) for at least your right stick. I use the FPS Elites.

  • Don't rely on the right stick for everything. Sometimes strafing is a better way to acquire targets with a controller. Personally, I always start on the default sensitivity and turn it by one notch over time. Eventually you'll hit the right sensitivity for you. Going straight to 10 isn't ideal. I play until I feel I've hit a "skill plateau" then up my sensitivity one notch every day until I feel comfortable.

  • I had trouble back when I first played CoD, so the solution that I came up with was to turn my sensitivity up to 10 and deal with it until I adjusted over time. I don't play CoD anymore, but this strategy helped me re-learn in battlefield, Halo, and now Destiny. You'll absolutely suck at first. You won't hit a shot, but stick with it for a day or two and see if you start to improve. It isn't for everybody, but it really helped me out; give it a shot and see if it works for you :)

  • This is the first FPS that I've played on a console. After giving up the gaming pc update grind several years ago, I stayed away from shooters, because of my spastic aiming with a controller. When Destiny came out, I decided it looked too good to not try. Asking the same question you have, the best advice I got was to set sensitivity to 1, then play until I was consistently getting headshots, then go up to 2, and repeat to whatever sensitivity you feel comfortable with. Also, what bending sinister said about keeping your reticle at head level is a must.

  • I use kontrol freaks. They clip onto the top of your thumb sticks to make them longer for more precision movements. A little tough to get used to on day 1, but they improved my accuracy a ton in every fps game that I play

    • I'm not a big FPS guy, but have become reasonably decent at Crucible - I hope this helps: You spelled out the problem really well: it's either slow or really fast in a firefight. It's hard to carefully nudge the sticks under fire, right? Here's what has helped me overcome this: have your reticle at headshot height before you're actually engaging. Continually adjust your height so that when someone pops into your screen, you're already at approximately the correct height and merely have to strafe (right stick) to position your target in ADS (aiming mode). I'm not about to out-twitch a lot of people, so it's all anticipation for me. Know the map, know where the enemy is going to be when he enters yours screen, and half the job is done. Have your target in your hipfire reticle BEFORE aiming, aim (pre-adjusted for headshot height), center target using RIGHT not left stick. Hope that helps. Feel free to add bending_sinister if you're PS4.

    • Either stop playing with a mouse and keyboard on PC, so as to get used to using sticks, don't jack up your sensitivity so crazy high, possibly get a new controller if it's definitely uneven, if using multiple controllers, don't. Consistently using one controller that works consistently is the best way to improve accuracy. If using a new controller, it'll probably need some breaking in.

    • PC gamer here, and after being used to custom sensitivities and the ability to disable smoothing, I can certainly say I feel your pain. It really comes down to getting used to it. Console games tend to not offer a lot of customization when it comes to controls, and Destiny is the greatest offender of this. Just gotta practice. Sorry bro.

    • I have mine at 6, it's about the same speed ADS as looking around non-ADS but that's just me, keep tweeking with the numbers and you will find one you can live with.
