Theory of The Nine
This grimore card speaks on a few theories as to what The Nine could be. Ghost Fragment: Legends 2 The Nine are survivors of the cis-Jovian colonies who made a compact with an alien force to ensure their own survival. The Nine are deep-orbit warminds who weathered the Collapse in hardened stealth platforms. The Nine are ancient leviathan intelligences from the seas of Europa or the hydrocarbon pits of Titan. The Nine arrived in a mysterious transmission from the direction of the Corona-Borealis supercluster. The Nine are the firstborn Awoken and their minds now race down the field lines of the Jupiter-Io flux tube. The Nine are Ghosts who pierced the Deep Black without a ship and meditated on the hissing silence of the heliopause. The Nine are the aspects of the Darkness, broken by the Traveler's rebuke, working to destroy us from within. The Nine is a viral language of pure meaning. The Nine are the shadows left by the annihilation of a transcendent shape, burned into the weft of what is.
I think this grimoire is overlooked. I noticed that it has nine descriptions of The Nine and it interested me to do a little research. Here's what I may have come up with as to answers: (I will address each paragraph as X.9, X representing the paragraph in the grimoire) 1.9 Mentions the cis-Jovian colonies, the cis-Jovian are the celestial bodies or planets before Jupiter that orbit the sun- Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. These colonies made a compact with an alien force which could be no other than the Traveler in order to survive, meaning humanity paired with the Traveler. 2.9 this is self explanatory as the war minds were created sometime after the discovery of the traveler. 3.9 This one is a little tricky and could be complete speculation. It mentions of leviathan intelligences coming from the moons Titan and Europa which in reality may be able to host life on the surface in their seas. I researched leviathan (but already knowing it resembles a monstrous or godlike sea creature) and the term is also referred to whales. The only lead/connection I could make was the Fallen use ships called "Ketches", which is a term used for a sea vessel. Upon the discovery of the fallen humanity may have interpreted their existence with that of equal magnitude of leviathan(s), and "intelligences" implies to many characteristics of our own humanity the fallen show through their command structure and multiple houses. 4.9 The Corona Borealis cluster is the constellation of stars that form a crown, which in Greek mythology is believed to be the crown given to Dionysus wife, who was the daughter of King Minos of Crete. Crete is the location of the Labyrinth which was home of the Minotaur. This could be the origin of the vex as they remained mysterious. The transmission mentioned may imply a frequency in which robots could translate, and furthermore be the description of the Vex's time travel/teleporting. 5.9 The awoken live in The Jupiter-Io flux tube, which is a magnetic field that exists between Jupiter and one of its moon. This could give explanation to the reef and as to why all the rubble and destroyed clutter is stuck in the reef. 6.9 this one I couldn't get too far with as to why the Ghosts would travel so far and sit on the edge of our solar system. The heliopause is a boundary of protons that orbit our sun and thus signifies the edge of our solar system, hence the "Deep Black" title once that boundary is crossed. EDIT: it could signify the extent of how far the Traveler's light can travel, rendering the ghosts from continual functionality as they sit still(meditate) in the "Deep Black" 7.9 The darkness is something that is not approved by the traveler and works to destroy us from within. The only connection I could make to this is the Chamber of Night mission where you disrupt the hive's ritual of killing the light of the Traveler with a piece of itself. This is possibly the main tactic the Hive use to fight the traveler, explaining the ''destroy us from within." Again this paragraph may be referring to the Hive's existence and involvement with The Nine. 8.9 This is a fat speculation but the "viral language and pure of meaning" statement didn't give much for me to lead on. My only connection is the involvement of the Exo's. The Exo's role in humanity was to keep our history and in the midst of The Collapse/Dark Age something happened to them and our history was lost. I believe "viral language" may mean history itself, it is everlasting and continually to be discovered and taught to a civilization. Humanity as well as the current Guardians/Vanguard in the tower are working to uncover unanswered questions and spread this "viral language" But it was "pure of meaning" that I mainly made the connection with history based on the background of the Exo's. History is facts after the present, meaning they don't change and will remain constant, or "pure". History is also used to learn from humanity's past mistakes, implying that it is used to pursue a pure direction or intent(meaning). 9.9 the annihilation of a transcendant shape, which may refer to the death of the Traveler. But shadows may imply something was left behind in the wake of its annihilation. Although this would imply The Nine is from another time dimension. "burned into the weft of what is" I translated as the all the previous mentioned points in The Nine maybe a cumilnation of all of them post the annihilation of the traveler. I don't really have any connections to this speculation, but could Xur be a cumilnation of all the existences in whatever The Nine's dimension is? This reasoning is only based on Xur's quote which I read from Tut813275's post: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/74062413/0/0

  • Idk, I find it hard to believe the Nine are all of these things at the same time. Since there's nine descriptions, wouldn't it be possible that the Nine are nine different creatures that came together as a sort of council? Each of the nine descriptions could be describing each separate one of the Nine.

  • I think I worked this out, here is my understanding of that card. Also, there is a lot of speculation supported by other cards that the universe is a simulation, kind of like the matrix (maybe run by the Vex). This would explain how guardians can be brought back to life and a lot of other things in the game too, maybe the Darkness is like a virus, corrupting the code of the universe.
The Nine are deep-orbit warminds who weathered the Collapse in hardened stealth platforms. The Nine are ancient leviathan intelligences from the seas of Europa or the hydrocarbon pits of Titan.
This means that The Nine are AI’s, who survived the collapse. We know that warminds are software that lives in hardware – perhaps in a hardened stealth platform like a Warsat. Perhaps these Warsats containing the AI of The Nine were based around Europa and Titan (moons of Jupiter and Saturn) – We know that there were colonies there but have since lost touch with them.
The Nine are survivors of the cis-Jovian colonies who made a compact with an alien force to ensure their own survival.
Survivors of the cis-Jovian [human] colonies, supports that they were AI’s developed by humans. But what about made contact with an alien force….? Remember before the collapse they were just warminds living in warsats, not yet The Nine
The Nine arrived in a mysterious transmission from the direction of the Corona-Borealis supercluster.
Could the transmission source be the aliens that the warminds made a pact with? If so, the warminds which were basically software, combined / modified themselves with the transmission in order to survive the collapse. At the point of combining with the transmission, the warminds became The Nine (ie The Nine arrived)
The Nine are Ghosts who pierced the Deep Black without a ship and meditated on the hissing silence of the heliopause. The Nine is a viral language of pure meaning.
This implies that the software of The Nine is no longer ‘deployed’ to the warsat hardware – After the warminds became The Nine they exist in the fabric of space itself. A viral language (software?) of pure meaning
The Nine are the firstborn Awoken and their minds now race down the field lines of the Jupiter-Io flux tube. The Nine is a viral language of pure meaning.
This implies that the space they now occupy is in the orbit of Jupter. It says ‘their minds’ occupy this space which supports that since becoming The Nine, they do not live in a physical shell, but their software minds occupy space. Regarding the firstborn Awoken part, perhaps whatever altered the warminds to become The Nine also affected the humans escaping the collapse changing them in to the [second born?] Awoken. This also supports the theory that the universe is a simulation, ie, the same signal which altered the warminds also affected the humans too. The signal which bonded itself with the warminds AI also became part of the human’s software to make The Awoken race. Like a viral language that can affect other simulations. The Queen of the Awoken is in contact with The Nine which supports some kind of alliance / link between them.
The Nine are the shadows left by the annihilation of a transcendent shape, burned into the weft of what is. The Nine are the aspects of the Darkness, broken by the Traveler's rebuke, working to destroy us from within.
The transcendent shape burned into the weft of what is I’m sure is The Traveller. The last line though implies that the Nine were fought against by the Traveller being aspects of the darkness. The working to destroy us from within part though isn’t clear. The Nine do send their agent Xur (who says he is not the Nine) to Earth every week to sell us better guns to point at each other. It could be that but I think it is something deeper. If they are working against the traveller and trying to destroy us it doesn’t mean they are evil / bad. It might be as the Exo stranger implies, that we are on the wrong side, perhaps the Traveller is the bad one, the Nine are fighting against it as aspects of the darkness. It can’t be as black and white as that though, the Hive for example definitely seem evil!

    • I take this grimoire as a description of each member of the 9. It is a roll call, I think. Some of them are physical beings, some are programs, some are warminds, some are creatures, all or different origin.

      • I think that those explanations are either a heterogeneous group of races, peoples, factions, you name it. Or just theories of what the nine may be. And as any theory, just maybe, they are all wrong about the nature of the nine.

If the 9 are warminds then that means Rasputin is one of them.

            • So possibly a council consisting of a human, a ghost, an awoken, a hive, a vex or member of dr shims team, a fallen, a warmind, an exo possibly the stranger, and a member of the same race as xur.

            • Xur talks about the curse of the nine in his ramblings. The curse of the nine is related to Beethoven. If anyone wrote more than nine symphonies, they would die before they finished the 10th symphony. Beethoven died after composing his 9th symphony.

                • I took the meaning of the card as the myth of 'The Nine' is enormous. Like the Atlantis of the Destiny era. I also took it to mean the true 'Nine' are none of those things.

                    • I just got Destiny, and I've already started delving into the lore, because it's just so damn interesting. I was reading the Ghost fragment for Dead Orbit, where it's the Arach ship captain telling the Ghost the story of his mission. This was really interesting to me, especially after reading up on the heliopause:
lo? Hello? Are you...oh, please, let it be alive. Wake up little Ghost, wake up. Just please give me some sign that you're listening. All right. I don't need...I know you're listening. Why would you be out here if you weren't here to...It's a miracle I found you out here. On this thing. I didn't know the Traveler sent its Ghosts out this far from home.
What if the Arach was at the Heliopause, and had found one of the Nine? Although why the Ghost Fragment would end up elsewhere escapes me, it's just a bit of information that could possibly relate to the Nine. Maybe the station they were looking at was a hardened stealth platform?

                      • I'd like to point out that there's also a real life conspiracy theory involving 'the council of the nine' and their involvement in earth. Apparently helped build the pyramids and were worshipped as gods by the Mayans. Seriously Google it

I am not sure if this fits into any of the theories, but we could also take into account there are possibly 9 planets in the Sol System. I know Pluto has been downgraded by definition, but Sedna, Eris, and Makemake are potential replacements to bring the number back to 9. Eris, being the largest and having a connection to Destiny, stands out. Edit: The number of trans-Neptunian bodies discovered support the possibility of the existence of other currently unknown planets due to their incredibly long and odd orbits such as the widely debated and theorized Planet X.
