If human race starts to get back on its feet it has to wipe the darkness out in order for the watcher to extend his protection to more territories, wiping the darkness could not be possible on systematic missions but it would be on a "kill anything that moves, find everything that doesn't move and kill it too". I don't know, I really love Horde Mode in games, and a 12 player horde mode just sounds ecstatic to me.
