There is no point in trying if you want good items. RNG is casual orientated.

Items rewarded post-game are given at random. It doesn't matter if you're the highest scoring player, you're not garantueed to recieve a reward worth the efforts that you put into the match.
Warning: Old post below is old and no longer represents my view on the matter. I have left it as a spoiler for posterity. If, however, you're one of the three lowest scoring players in the game, all with low kill/death ratios and did nothing but feed the other team kills, you're given the chance to earn something while the top player can outright miss out on getting anything (I've seen it happen and heard my friends complain about it, and it's definitely an issue).
Bungie; unless you want to continue pandering to casuals (while at the same time making it harder for anyone to enjoy playing it competitively), I advise something to be changed. Make item rewards given at the post-game screen to be weighted, for example, make the 2 highest-scoring players always receive at least an engram. EDIT: Honestly I'm not wholly against the idea of having random item rewards, but if you worked your rear off to place at the top of the leaderboard you should by all rights be guaranteed to recieve at least something. This way even those who don't want to place consistently at the top (because it may be too much effort for them) have the chance to receive a good item. If you don't place first, you have a chance to get something. If you do place first, you definitely DO get something for your efforts.

  • I disagree. I think the end game loot system is fine. And I'll try to explain why. Your complaint that the crucible doesn't reward the good players isn't true. It does. But it doesn't reward them in the way you would like or expect them to. The idea behind the crucible is teamwork. (Although it's stupid that you can't communicate with your team, but that's another topic.) Because the idea behind the crucible is teamwork, you get rewarded as a team when you win and get a lesser reward when you lose. When you win, you get 3 crucible marks and 25 rep. But when you lose, you only get 2 marks and 10 rep. The way I like to look at the end game loot is a random "thank you for playing". They don't only reward the top players or favor the top players with rewards because they want to promote playing as a team. The loot system is merely a bonus add on whether you win or lose. Remember, the crucible is about the team and not the individual. Now personally I would like it if everyone got something, even if most of the time that something was spinmetal or some other collectable. Hell even everyone getting at least green weapons once they are past a certain level so they can break them down for parts. But I also understand why they didn't. There are other factors to consider. They don't give out spinmetal every time because they don't want you spending all of your time in the crucible. They want you to go explore and collect things from the environment. Basically they don't want half of the game to be virtually nonexistent for most players after a week or two. They want the entire world to do well. Also if they gave out something every single time, people would have a large surplus of parts and collectables very early on and would remove the grind for more parts to upgrade your gear. Lastly, and this is a problem I see with a lot of poster. Not specifically you but just in general. When people complain about the loot system being unfair, their judgment is skewed by emotion. When one does well but doesn't get any gear yet the person with a .2 KD get a legendary item, the good person is upset. For obvious reasons. But because your memory of that event is coincided with a strong negative emotion it outweighs the the memory of the events where you get a good item. This is because the human brain naturally puts more weight behind negative emotions than positive ones. My point to that wall of text was that if you look at the hard data, neither good nor bad players are favored in the loot drops. I think many here feel that only the bad players get anything worthwhile while that is just not true. If you made it through all of that, thanks for taking the time to read it.

    • Considering that we are all used to playing FPS's where you get nothing but XP and stats to look at at the end of a game, I would think that tacking on the possibility of getting some cool loot would just be a nice bonus to enjoy on top of a PvP experience that we are used to. It provides an even chance for all players to improve their builds and encourages players who aren't as skilled at PvP to play, because, even if they lose every time with horrible K/D ratios, they still have an equal shot at still getting something positive out of the experience. I've gotten game MVP and gotten nothing, I've gone on 3-, 4- , and 5-game streaks of getting no end-of-game drops and I've also gotten legendary drops and even got 4 drops after one game. In each case, I've looked at it as the possibility of getting a door prize while playing . . . if I get something, awesome . . . if not, there's always next game.

      • So let me get this straight. You want a stranglehold on all the good items because you believe that top players and ONLY the top players get rewarded. You want to punish people who are just starting to play the Crucible and have no idea how it works for "being a waste of resources" while they try to figure out whats what. You also want to punish teams that have the misfortune of going against organized groups. Listen. I can understand you want a reward for doing well. I raise my eyebrow at the fact that simply having a better score and bragging rights in a match is not enough for you. You want competitive gaming? Organize it. But competitive gaming is all about the scoreboards and victory is the reward you earn. Seriously. The randomization of loot means that no one can have a stranglehold on the item economy. Poor players have a chance to become better with a chance for better gear but you want to lock that behind the elite barrier so that you get to complain about not having enough inventory while someone who's hurting for gear well... doesn't get anything. Convoluted logic much?

        • I do agree with him that random loot can piss you off especially if you play high level strikes and missions and you get a lvl 14 chest plate when I'm lvl 25 and crucible in kinda annoying if you're actually good, I don't even try but I'm on top of the leaderboard which is bad. That means that I only got two to four kills a game without trying and be on top? That's just sad that people who got 1 kill every game got legendary's and exotics. How about everyone on the team gets a reward even if they do bad like c'mon, no reward just sucks. Even enough?

        • Maybe there shouldn't be any reward. So no one will cry about it. lol its totally random right now, and yeah its frustrating when you do great and are first and everyone else on the team gets gear. But this the nature of the beast. Maybe they should lower the mark requirements for the gear you buy and just take out the rewards because it seems like a lot of ppl are really mad about this

              • Yep, the RNG system sucks dick in this game. Seriously tired of getting a bunch of uncommon and rare items I ALREADY have. Unfortunately the only way to get legendary and above is by spamming strikes and the crucible. Of course I have no problem repeatedly playing crucible matches, but jesus christ, you have to complete a shit ton of bounties just to advance to rank 2.

                      • The only problem I have with it is that because it's rng, you see people in crucible that are just "lucky" with the numbers in the game dominating with a really good exotic weapon. It completely makes if unbalanced.

                      • I finish top 3 for my team basically every crucible. Every now and then I dominate, and have been owned a few times too. The loot reward system is fine. It's just an added bonus thing which generates excitement. I get more annoyed when my team narrowly loses because some tool wanted to sit back and camp/snipe for their kdr, rather then capture or defend a control point. That costs me a mark and rep, which is what I want in the long run to buy stuff from crucible quarter master etc. I honestly don't see the completely random reward system being an issue.
