The TRUE Shadow of the Traveler - Spoiler!! Plot Explained

The TRUE Shadow of the Traveler - Spoiler!! Plot Explained Ever since I first saw this image, I knew something wasnt right about the Traveler. We were lied to. Led to believe it was our benefactor and savoir. Giving us advanced technology and unlimited protection, FOR FREE. That we were the GOOD GUYS, fighting a righteous crusade against the evil "Darkness" and its army to reclaim our worlds. We couldnt have been any more wrong... The Traveler It is common knowledge that the Traveler was first discovered on Mars. From the trailer Bungie revealed - E3 2014 Trailer - you can clearly see that when it first came in contact with humans it was undamaged, or as I like to say, "un-ruptured", compared to how it is now - Ruptured Traveler. Yes I use that word because to me it looks like the Traveler's "wounds" were actually caused internally, specifically by a force that broke out of it. Also the fact that the "rupture" is on the bottom (pointed toward the humans) follows both physics (gravity) and the fact that whatever came out was aiming for humans. The Traveler is a type of spore pod. Fungus can form very similar large white spheres - fungal spore pod What are the spores the Traveler released? Ghosts Since everyone is familiar with Ghosts I only want to focus on three main points, taken right from Ghosts @ Destinypedia "Ghosts originate from the Traveler's technology and light." - biomechanical parasites most likely nanobot fungus similar to the "Technocyte Virus" from Dark Sector/Warframe Technocyte Virus "Ghosts seek out their Guardian companions from the ancient dead and revive them." - Certain fungus strains are also capable of controlling hosts, turning them into literal zombies that infect others by causing them to explode, very similar to what happens with the Hunter's Light based super "combustion"- Zombie Fungus and also Combustion "An advertisment for Destiny claimed that Ghosts existed during the Golden Age." - If we were led to believe the Ghosts came to be to aid us AFTER The Collapse, why would they be here BEFORE? Unless they were the trigger. - Original Ad Achlyophage Symbiote To start with, Achlyophage Symbiote , appears to be a parasitic organism that produces light. Achlyophage Symbiote IN EXCHANGE FOR EATING YOUR THOUGHTS. Thoughts are part of your brain's "dark matter". Dark matter produces large amounts of electricity, literally an organic battery - Brain's Dark Matter Still not satisfied, I wanted to break down the meaning of Achlyophage Symbiote and figure out its true nature. "Achlyo" - is Greek for "darkness" - achlyo "Phage" - means “a thing that devours”, also Greek derived from the word "phagos/phagous" - meaning “eating,” “feeding on,” or “devouring” - phage phagous "Symbiote" - also known as "symbiont" - means "an organism living in a state of symbiosis", with the last word meaning - "the living together of two dissimilar organisms, as in mutualism, commensalism, amensalism, or parasitism." symbiont symbiosis So the true meaning of Achlyophage Symbiote is - Darkness-devouring Parasite. What is the Darkness it eats? Your BRAIN AND THOUGHTS, or rather the ELECTRICITY your brain produces. And in return it creates LIGHT as its waste product. Enemies I dont think they are OUR enemies, rather they are the Traveler's. However since we humans are both the Traveler's food source and its fighting force, they seek to purge us as well - very similar to how in Bungie's earlier games the Forerunners (and later the Covenant) used Halos to purge all sentient life to combat the parasitic Flood - Halo Array However not all species would sit back and let the Traveler consume them. Vex "When they appear in our solar system, Vex arrive by way of warp gates set up around the galaxy from an unknown location or time" "Though they are robotic in nature, the Vex are not new off the assembly line; rather, they look and feel like they could be thousands of years old" "Their bodies are made of an unknown metal alloy resembling hammered brass, yet they are not entirely mechanical; some organic materials are present as well" - Vex @ Destinypedia So we know that the Vex are biomechanical humanoid creatures, that are from another time and place long ago. They have abondoned their organic brains to prevent being consumed. Further digging reveals the Vault of Glass special gear with bonuses against Vex. The inscriptions on this gear, pieced together, paints three distinct stories that give us insight into the Vex. I highlighted on this in a recent post, and included the link there so go check it out for yourself - Vault of Glass - REWARDS LEAKED!! Also - Vex Precursors Grimiore Card - http://www.bungie.net/en/Grimoire/2/4611686018428808889/Enemies/Vex Elements The Traveler empowers human corpses- Guardians - to use elemental "magic" This is accomplished by the Ghost parasitizing of its human host Elements are really the 3 stages of digestion, by the Ghosts Void - the absorption/digestion process by the nanobot fungus swarm drains life energy, aka "The Hunger" - The Hunger Arc - the harnessed electricity in pure form, stored and released as powerful charges Light - the byproduct (or waste product) produced by consuming sentient beings' thoughts and electrical brain impulses The Darkness
“The brightest flame casts the darkest shadow.”
― George R.R. Martin, A Clash of Kings
“Pulvis et umbra sumus. (We are but dust and shadow.)”
― Horace, The Odes of Horace: Bilingual Edition Our solar system was born from the Darkness. We are creatures of shadow. Even we humans, standing in the light of our Sun, carry darkness in our minds. Its this mysterious darkness that our thoughts, imagination, personality, wants, desires, and character are derived from. The darkness is what makes us, us. It IS us. The Traveler seeks to devour our darkness, our very life source, and turn our dry corpses into a zombie army. My guess is after all living sentients are consumed, the Ghosts then form a new Traveler and seek out other worlds to infect and devour - very similar to Life Fibers from the anime, Kill la Kill - Life Fibers @ Kill la Kill wiki TL:DR The Traveler is a giant artificial mechanical nano-fungus spore pod, that released its spores upon Earth, rupturing itself and causing untold death and destruction in The Collapse The Ghosts are spores/ nanobot fungus swarm that spread infection and parasitize on humans, turning them into zombies and allowing them to combust the Traveler's enemies with Light The Guardians are reanimated corpses controlled by the nanobots (Ghosts) and able to utilize life force/brain energy in the form of elements - True Reclaimer [PS4 True_Reclaimer] ReClaim Clan
Rise. • While I agree that the traveler is the real evil in the games, I have to disagree upon the reasoning. I doubt it's a robotic fungus, I should really do some research and form my own arguments.

  • My one question for this, then, is that: wasn't the Traveler responsible FOR the Golden Age? I might be totally wrong on this, but as I recall, we credit the discovery of the Traveler with the start of the Golden Age. If it advances humanity along, then it isn't entirely evil, per se. If advancement is just a way of reproduction, and not a show of compassion, then that means it is (at worst) apathetic, not evil. Furthermore, if it is entirely technological (can't feed on its own darkness), where'd it come from? This article leads the reader to believe that the Vex were also once biological and did the techno-corruption to themselves afterwards, so we still require an origin for the Traveler itself. If the Traveler was entirely biological, or even mostly biological, we wouldn't have to explain its origin. But if it's all tech, it had to be built.

  • Your theory is well thought out. However... let's take a look at some of the finer points, shall we?
Yes I use that word because to me it looks like the Traveler's "wounds" were actually caused internally, specifically by a force that broke out of it. Also the fact that the "rupture" is on the bottom (pointed toward the humans) follows both physics (gravity) and the fact that whatever came out was aiming for humans.
The key words we're seeing here are "to me it looks like..." Already we can see that this statement is, after all, just an opinion. Next, we cannot assume that even if the rupture was created from internal pressure that it was necessarily aiming at Humanity.
The Traveler is a type of spore pod. Fungus can form very similar large white spheres - fungal spore pod What are the spores the Traveler released?
This, also, qualifies for "rampant speculation."
"Ghosts originate from the Traveler's technology and light." - biomechanical parasites most likely nanobot fungus similar to the "Technocyte Virus" from Dark Sector/Warframe Technocyte Virus.
Biomechanical parasites? No proof of that either... I should also point out that any loose connection (real or imagined) to something from another game doesn't apply to fact-finding.
"Ghosts seek out their Guardian companions from the ancient dead and revive them." - Certain fungus strains are also capable of controlling hosts, turning them into literal zombies that infect others...
I've never seen certain fungus strains revive anything from dust and bones. Just because a Ghost "revives" doesn't mean its a parasite. Defibrillators revive. Do we call them parasites?
"An advertisment for Destiny claimed that Ghosts existed during the Golden Age." - If we were led to believe the Ghosts came to be to aid us AFTER The Collapse, why would they be here BEFORE? Unless they were the trigger.
I wasn't led to believe that...? If someone assumes something incorrectly, it doesn't mean that there are dark motives behind the assumption.
So the true meaning of Achlyophage Symbiote is - Darkness-devouring Parasite. What is the Darkness it eats? Your BRAIN AND THOUGHTS, or rather the ELECTRICITY your brain produces. And in return it creates LIGHT as its waste product.
To start, I'm not sure where you took your definition of symbiosis, but according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it is "the relationship between two different kinds of living things that live together and depend on each other." So... Darkness-Devouring Symbiote. To associate darkness=dark matter is flawed to begin with... but to extend it further to darkness=dark matter=electricity--> Light is... a stretch of the imagination. There is nothing regarding the Vex which pertains in any way to your theory. I'm leaving that alone. And again, we see that your theory of elemental foundations behind the Light is based on an opinion (the idea that Ghosts are parasitic.) On to the Darkness. A quote from George R.R. Martin and Horace will have positively no credit behind them when referring to Destiny. Totally different idea/universes/perspectives/plot lines/characters/etc, etc, etc. Believing it's something similar to an anime you watch also doesn't quite win the "factual foundation" award.
The Traveler is a giant artificial mechanical nano-fungus spore pod, that released its spores upon Earth, rupturing itself and causing untold death and destruction in The Collapse The Ghosts are spores/ nanobot fungus swarm that spread infection and parasitize on humans, turning them into zombies and allowing them to combust the Traveler's enemies with Light The Guardians are reanimated corpses controlled by the nanobots (Ghosts) and able to utilize life force/brain energy in the form of elements.
Total creativity points for you. I don't mean to be sarcastic or mean, so apologies if that's how I've come across. It's just not cool to put "SPOILERS: Plot Explained" as click-bait when it's clear that while well put together, I could run a fleet of city buses through the holes in it. I'd love to see what you come up with in the future, though!

    • Great write up and imaginative thinking, I commend you good sir! HOWEVER, There are some fairly large flaws in your theory. 1. Everything that you have pointed out stems from when the Traveler "burst" whilst aiming at humans, but the reality is, that there was no city below the traveler prior to it's arrival. It's common knowledge that the last safe city was built under the traveler AFTER it's last stand with the darkness. 2. At one point, you describe how the Vex would have made themselves the way they are to avoid "consumption" by the traveler spores, but if this were true (and it's a big but, no pun intended) then how would Exo-type guardians be different? Would the Exo's not be immune as they are not organic life forms, but incredibly advanced, self aware robots? And if they indeed saw this crazy undertaking occurring as you so describe, would they not have fought back? And if they had, would they not have been destroyed for fear of future uprisings? Lastly, if you go as far as to state that the Exo's were built AFTER the collapse to aid the traveler in further "zombie takeover" (thus eliminating most of the things I mentioned earlier as potential scenarios) you still wouldn't be able to explain how an Exo harnesses the "light" of the traveler as your theory states that it is the "light" which is a by-product of a wholly organic chemical reaction through spores and such? Things to ponder perhaps...

      • I am a bit curious considering a few of Xur's quotes if you stand near him long enough. "Your Traveler has a dark mirror" There are a few other quotes as well, possibly relating to the fact that this 'Dark Mirror' is what makes up Xur and the Nine.. Perhaps they are what we could call 'Dark Guardians'

        • I believe that we found one of the oldest races in the galaxy the perfect blend of energy/organism/mechanism. This creature/race came under attack by the darkness/enemies. When the Traveler realized it could not stand against this foe alone it fled to our galaxy and looked for the most powerful/best suited race to be its proxy army. (to fight the war it never could). Knowing it had time it built us up (the Golden Age). After the darkness had arrived it knew it had equipped us enough to win. But we didn't have the soldiers. So it sent out its ghosts to give Earth its true army. Near immortal engines of destruction. (guardians). But it did not plan for the hive to steal a piece of it, or the cabal to unleash their siege weapons so quickly. This made the traveler sacrifice part of itself (the rupture). Now it lies dormant trying its best to heal. I don't believe it is a parasite because after the final mission if you look at the traveler you can see its light returning. But you could be right.

        • I don't know, but, really... in a symbiosis, both organisms benefit from each other. Symbiosis is similar to parasitism, but far from the same. So, if you are relating ghosts to a symbiont... well, then they get feed, we get powers, BUT no one gets anything bad such as thoughts eaten ???? Good theory though.

        • Your theory was just astounding! I really loved it and I frankly would love to have your plot as a plot twist down the road. If Bungie's theory is unsavory. I was reading the comments and somebody left a post of the traveler and said it was a "vessel" of sorts. The point I was trying to get across, (well at this point its more of a wish for you to add onto your theory) is if the traveler is a spore pod, then what is it "feeding" on?? The ghosts feed on us, but what does the traveler feed on??

Very interesting read and ideas. If our enemies are the Travelers enemies then why do they fight each other? That's the only thing that i can see wrong with your theory. Otherwise we would in effect be just like the flood from Halo..a more technical version so to speak..

It's just an example of how you got very caught up in your theory, and forgot to step back and see if it actually makes sense. I think it's great that you put so much time into this theory, and I hope you keep puting this much passion into your projects.
